hi,
just installed my gentoo with KDE..but having some problem about the 'emerge' commands.

1. if i do 'emrege sync', it will update the portage. will it blindly overwrite all the stuff(especially the binay files in /distfiles) in portage tree?

2. not sure the difference of the following commands
emerge system
emerge -u system
emerge -u world

i know that 'emerge -u system' is to update the core components and 'emerge -u world' is to update non-essential components. but what does it mean by 'core' and 'non-essential'? does it state in doc?
and why should we need to run 'emerge system' b4 'emerge -u system' (it said in doc), and what's the 'system' means? kernel?

3. it's about shell...the default shell in gentoo is bash. but i can't fins any configuration files, eg. bashrc. where should i put my alias or path?

4. where should i set the path, environment var? in the \env.d?

thanks a lot

No, only the ebuilds are updated. If you have your own custom ebuilds don't store them in /usr/portage, instead put them in /usr/local/portage. Read about PORTDIR_OVERLAY with "man make.conf".

Those 2 do the same thing. They will update all the core system components like bash, gcc, portage, etc.

emerge -u world

This will try to update all other installed packages. Stuff like Apache, MySQL, Postfix/Sendmail, KDE, Gnome, etc.

By default the dot files aren't copied for the root user. You can copy them manually from /etc/skel
Code:

cp /etc/skel/.bash* ~/

I believe you can modify it in /etc/env.d/00basic without any problems. Not sure if this gets overwritten or not. It should be config protected by portage.
