Hi.
As I'm typing text, I often find myself running Gucharmap to just query the EM DASH character. Is there a way I can affect that character to a key combo with Xfce? Say AltGr+Shift+_ for instance?
Also, as a subsidiary question, my laptop, a Dell Studio XPS has a few multimedia keys (vol. up/down/mute, media player next/previous/stop) that I can't seem to use. Ubuntu and Fedora have something that make them work. How can I make these keys work as well?
Thanks for any hint or suggestion. _________________ Gentoo addict: tomorrow I quit, I promise!... Just one more emerge...

Hello,
For 2), I use the keyboard settings panel: you add a new shortcut, enter the command, then press the key and it should work. If not, you have to assign the multimedia keys with some code, as described in the non-official Gentoo Wiki: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Multimedia_Keys
For 1), I think it's more related to X than XFCE, or your editor. _________________ Kind regards,

Indeed in Xfce control panel, keyboard applet I could assign some multimedia keys but only those which are supposed to run a command (Thunar, Firefox, mplayer, whatever). As for the volume buttons the keys seem recognized as they do have a Xf86 code but they're inactive. What I'd like as well is have an OSD indication for volume changes, as there is in most distributions.

Are there standard ways to do that? _________________ Gentoo addict: tomorrow I quit, I promise!... Just one more emerge...

For the OSD stuff, I think you have to bind the Volume buttons with an app that change the volume and displays some stuff on the display. But I don't know the name of that application, I am happy with the simple binding with amixer. _________________ Kind regards,
