Hello,

For now, to install sys-apps/portage, you need... portage because all the configuration and installation intelligence resides inside the ebuild.
So, I see it as a "chicken-and-egg" problem.

But... if all the stuff that copies the needed files & Co. into the system is in a ./configure, Makefile, setup.py... inside portage-XXX.tar.bz2, it could be easy to install it to a non-Gentoo system.

What do you think: is that a nice to have or is am I just boring to ask it?

The fun stuff would be "just install Portage and transform any distribution to a Gentoo distribution" ;)
(as I did in my GentooFromScratch project).

I think the easiest way to do that is to use one of the rescue portage images along with the instructions for rescuing.

Another method is to checkout the git sources and use it directly to install portage. It is in python/bash and is capable of running from the checkout. You just need to export the PATH and PYTHON_PATH environment variables to the checkout's bin and pym directories.

Hello,

I know these solutions ;)

Regarding Gentoo Prefix, my goal was to compile Gentoo from scratch, not as prefix.
Paludis has configuration and make scripts, but it depends on more things than portage. And I prefer using "the official way".

Thanks anyway for those options.
