Okay, I have a new laptop, first time I've had a functional portable in years...

On the lan at home I have static ip addressing, and I prefer it that way (also all machines have an mtu of 7200), but I also want to have dhcp as an easy option for when elsewhere.

My thoughts are to have two aliased configs in /etc/conf.d/net, use config_eth0:0="" and similar for each, and have them started in different soft runlevels, so I can choose at bootloader prompt depending where I am.

Is this the correct or best way to go about this, or does anyone else have any tips or recommendations?

I think this is the solution:
see part "Laptop: Static at Home and Dynamic Outside "
