The system reboots itself as before. |

Okay its confirmed now; the kernel is unable to boot and it gives me the same error message as the previous kernel. |

Then you have a drive issue. The .config I provided should work given your present setup. That it doesn't, and that it comes back with ext errors just screams hard drive issue. Perhaps the drive is bad. Perhaps you had a bad shutdown. With the .config you have, you should work perfectly, or as close as you're going to get.
If this is your initial Gentoo install, I'd suggest you try again. If this has been working for some time, and now has started to act up, then your hard drive is definitely finding its way to digital heaven.
What brought the situation on in the first place?
Cheers,

That's sad to hear. I'm going to reformat and install another distro to see if the drive is actually bad. This is actually my second install of Gentoo the first time I must have gotten lucky. Luckily, I do have a spare drive with Xp on it. Your time spent configuring will not go to waste. Thanks to all those that contributed, especially Pappy. |

graycolor,
Thats a bit drastic.
Boot the CD and run fsck on the root partition but do not let it fix any errors yet.
If the data there is valuable, make a partition image, so you have a backup.
With your undo facility in place, run fsck -y, which will let it do what it thinks is required.
Be aware that fsck makes the filesystem meta data self consistent. It says nothing about user data.
Sometimes fsck makes things worse, not better, hence the need for the backup. _________________ Regards,

Oh thank GOD . I was able to boot fixing errors using chkdsk from my XP USB.
My var/log/dmesg is here
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/242900/
NOTE: I have not auto-loaded any modules on this boot.
Thanks, Pappy I don't think I could have done it without you. |

Hi,
I posted in another thread and this seemed the more likely place to get a better response to my queries.
As I stated there, I've had to upgrade to libata to get my CD/DVD player working. Unfortunately, following the how-to here led to a system that wouldn't boot at all. Fortunately, I still have the older bits and pieces around, so getting back to a system that I can use for most things is easy.
Still, where have I gone wrong? Why am I unable to get a working libata system up and running? Details and configuration files are listed in the other thread.
Best,
Alex |

Recent "emerge -vDu world" broke my system, so I wasn't able to boot. I stumbled upon this post (which is basically migrating from PATA to SATA and replacing "hdx" to "sdx" in "grub.conf" and "/etc/fstab"), and the problem went away. I always wondered why my hard disks came up as "sdx" instead of "hdx" in a relatively new Live CD, because I clearly remember it was "hda" when I installed Gentoo a few years ago.
Anyhow, for my case, it was the following that did the trick.
Code: | # lspci
00:01.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] CS5536 [Geode companion] Host Bridge (rev 33)
00:0f.0 ISA bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] CS5536 [Geode companion] ISA (rev 03)
00:0f.2 IDE interface: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] CS5536 [Geode companion] IDE (rev 01)
Device Drivers
Serial ATA and Parallel ATA drivers (ATA)
ATA SFF support (ATA_SFF)
ATA BMDMA support (ATA_BMDMA)
CS5536 PATA support (PATA_CS5536)
|
Thanks everyone for your time and support.

Your current problem us that udev no longer makes /dev nodes for hda and frineds as the old IDE kernel brancg is depreciated.
You need to change your kernel to use the SCSI layer and the low level PATA drivers in libata, which is found in the SATA menu.
At the same time, you have to change /etc/fstab and grub.conf to use the new SCSI names.
As I don't have your lspci output, I can't help with the right low level drivers for you. Other than the low level drivers, in the SATA menu, this post tells what is needed. IF you have an Intel ICH chipset, that post is all you will need.
There is a new option in the SATA menu, not described in that post, Code: | [*] ATA SFF support | which you will need on as all the PATA drivers are inside it.
Mount your partitions as you did during the install, get into your chroot and fix things. Post your lspci output if you need help with the kernel options. |
I have been running into this with my last few builds... the minimal boot cd still lists all my ide drives as /dev/hda /dev/hdb ... and I have to remember (oohhh the agony of trying to remember, instead of having the internet remember for me) to use /dev/sda1 /dev/sda3 in my /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/grub.conf files. |

Thank you so much for this thread (particularly NeddySeagoon's original guide). Made it pretty straightforward to get my disks mounting again after a world emerge. Now I just gotta figure out why my network connection is junked... I think I'm going to update every week from now on rather than every year - this is way too stressfull;) |

For the 3 people on the planet who use PowerPC, this is a big issue - especially considering that yaboot needs to be able to see 'sdxy' when it does its thing, and the LiveCD kernel doesn't support or use the new ATA layer. _________________ /* Nobody will ever see this message */
