|
|
Hello,
I use GNU/Linux for 2 years now and I want to install Gentoo on my laptop.
I dowloaded the last version of the minimal CD for AMD64/EM64T, the mdr5 sum is correct and the CD seems to be well burned but the boot fails.
That's the error I can see:
Quote: | >> Looking for cdrom
! ! Media not found
>> No bootable medium found. Waiting for new devices...
>> Looking for the cdrom
! ! Media not found
! ! Could not find CD to boot. Something else needed!
>> Determing root device...
! ! Could not find the root block device in .
Please specify another value or: press Enter for the same type "shell" for a shell, or "q" to skip...
root block device() : : |
Here is result of lspci :

Haiku,
Welcome to Gentoo.
The usual cause of this error is that the kernel on the CD is too old for your hardware. However, your drive controller Code: | 00:0b.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation MCP79 SATA Controller (rev b1) | has been in the kernel for several years.
How old is the liveCD you are using ?
A Gentoo CD is not required to install Gentoo as the CD only provides the tools to accomplish the install.
Many people like to use SystemRescueCD, which is up to date, Gentoo based and provides a GUI while you install _________________ Regards,

Thanks for your response NeddySeagoon.
I think the LiveCD I use is the last one, because I choosed "current iso" on the mirror :

I'll try to use SystemRescueCD, but I let this thread opened for the moment in case anyone have an idea or if I fail. |

Yes I have encountered such a problem of no bootable medium found, and my laptop is old compaq n410c.
I 've been told on the Internet that there were some old laptops like IBM,DELL,COMPAQ ,etc may occur this problem.
But until now my problem is still unsolved.Anny one helps us. |

ankywong,
On old systems, the CD was booted using a floppy image burned in the right place on the CD for the BIOS to find.
Boot CDs today do not support that and such BIOSes cannot boot ISOLINUX from the CD.
You may copy the CD to a USB stick and boot that, provided the system can boot from USB. _________________ Regards,

Hello Guys,
I have the exact output .. using a Fujitsu v6555, and have the same problem .. using a USB drive did not solve it (used the Gentoo Live USB guide) to make sure I was doing it right .. booted fine on my work pc) and am unable to activate the x server using the system rescue cd .. in fact I downloaded the latest live cd yesterday and tried everything all over again including workarounds posted on the forums since 2004 seems that this bug has been there for a while .. not sure what to do .. please help _________________ Let Sleeping Tigers Lie, They bite worse than dogs |

Hello Guys .. something finally worked .. for what reason I have no clue .. made a bootable usb key using the (surprisingly) Gentoo 2008 .iso and it boots :) .. no x server but gather that is on account of the nvidia drivers and x.org conf file .. so I can proceed with normal installation using the 1. Latest Gentoo stage 3 and portage snapshot by following the latest guide or 2. use the text installer available on the 2008 CD to do a binary install and then updating the system ..
I am tempted towards the second option but if I have done my homework that is not the correct way to go about it .. it will either result in a non-bootable system or tremendously unstable one .. am I correct?
Sorry for the trouble here guys .. Appreciate your help though ..
Thanks again :) _________________ Let Sleeping Tigers Lie, They bite worse than dogs |

Shiv,
Doing a binary install using the 2008.0 installer will get you a Gentoo from February 2008. That is, it will be 30 months old.
The recommended update procedure for such an out of date install is to reinstall. That defeats the purpose of the binary install in the first place.
Its OK to use the 2008.0 Installer as a tool to follow the handbook as it only provides a few tools to allow the install to take place. None of its code goes into the install.
You can update a 30 month old install and very educational it will be too. It takes much longer than a standard install, which is why as reinstall is recommended. You have enough to learn following the handbook, so go that route. _________________ Regards,
