PostPosted: Thu Nov 04, 2010 9:06 pm    Post subject: X does not start [solved] Reply with quote

Hi!
I've got a problem when I try to start X. Previously everything was working perfect. I had KDE 4.5.2 and decided to change to something like fluxbox.
I unmerged everything related to KDE and tried to start X, but I found strange errors about not having KMS properly configured.
I unmerged everything related to X and decided to start from scratch. I followed the X configuration howto but when I try to start X I find the same problem. It tries to start and then comes back to the prompt. The only thing that seems to work is
Code:
X -retro

I would appreciate any hint that someone could give me! :)

So here is the information (sorry to put the output as text):

emerge --info

If you've unmerged everything, what window manager / desktop are your trying to start? The fact the X -retro works tells me that X should be working fine, i think you just need to move on to installing a WM/DE.

First of all, thanks for the quick reply! :)
If X is working OK then should show at least show a couple of consoles and an awful interface...
Maybe I am wrong but I think it was always like that. That is what I did always before installing KDE: test that X can run and show some graphical environment.

Looking forward to reading your answer!

By the way: I tried to install fluxbox but it did not run. However, installing xdm worked perfect (but failed after login). Same story with slim.

That's because twm used to be installed by default, that's why you had consoles, xclock, and an ugly interface. That's no longer the case as technically xorg-server doesn't need twm. You can either specifically emerge it or set "-minimal" for xinit and update.

Not sure why fluxbox wouldn't start, never used it but sounds like X is working fine if you can see a GUI login screen.

I'm not familiar with xdm, but just to make sure, did you do everything needed for Fluxbox to be found by the xinit/startx/however xdm starts them?
I never used a dm so I just declare whatever I want to start with startx in the ~/.xinitrc file, such as exec startkde or exec startfluxbox or exec e16 and so on (yeah, I have KDE, Gnome, e16, Fluxbox and I don't even remember what else anymore, funny to run them all at once too!).

Anyways, sorry if I'm saying something completely obvious but I see this little thing often goes unnoticed but I don't really remember how xdm starts them.
Just my thoughts. ;^^

OK. I've checked and twm was not installed. However, I installed it and everything remains the same.
Anyway, "-minimal" was already set in the USE list of xorg-server.

I'm not telling that X is not working, just that it seems that the WM cannot start or something similar.
If I use xdm or slim I've got a graphical login and when I login myself slim shows something like "login command could not be executed".
If I run startx I see a black screen for one second and then returns to the prompt.

As usual, any help will be really appreciated! :)

OK. It's working! :D
The only thing that changed is that I installed xterm 8O
How could it be?
In my first attempts I saw the errors saying that twm, xclock and xterm were not installed. Of course, I thought that twm was the most important, as has been told in a previous message, and installed it. The problem was still there...
Of course the error was then that the other two were not present. I installed xterm and it was solved. BUT to be honest I should say that xterm installed 4 more packages. Unfortunately I could not see which ones... :(

So, thanks a lot for your help rh1 and Chiito!
