Hello everyone, I'm trying to start X server on one of the old laptops I found... It's a DELL's Inspiron 2600 with

Code:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82830 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] (rev 04)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 82830 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller]

I have VIDEO_CARDS="intel" and emerge xorg-server pulls in xf86-video-intel, however when I try to start X server with startx, /etc/init.d/xdm start, or X -retro -configure /roor/xorg.conf.new (file exists), in all the cases one thing happens - screen clears, I see the console's input marker "_" in the top left cornere, and nothing more happens. I thought maybe xterm was missing, so I emerged gnome-light, but it didn't help. Here's what cat /var/log/Xorg.log.0 says:
Code:
X.Org X Server 1.7.6
Release Date: 2010-03-17
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0

X doesn't actually clear the screen, it just switches to VT7. Can you switch back to the VT you came from with Alt+Fx and post the output here?

Also, when you use startx, make sure something you have installed that doesn't terminate is in ~/.xinitrc. If you want to start gnome, I believe it's gnome-session you want (I don't have gnome, so run which gnome-session to check). I recommend getting it to work with startx first, with something simple like xterm in your ~/.xinitrc, before trying with xdm.

Nope, I can not switch to anything, keyboard becomes unresponsive (however INPUT_DEVICES="evdev synaptics"), and I can still ssh into the system and reboot it though. Without ssh only way to reboot is is a power button.

I did install gnome and gdm, that's why I was trying to start the whole thing with "/etc/init.d/xdm start". However I've read that "X -retro" is just supposed to output a checker pattern without starting anything - this doesn't work either.

hal and dbus are running

Hm... I've rebuild the kernel to have all video drivers to run as modules, and also rebuilt xorg-server and xf86-video-intel, and it all works very smooth now. Thank you :)
