PostPosted: Sat May 22, 2010 7:54 pm    Post subject: [SOLVED] k3b fails to find optical devices. Reply with quote

I've been running into an issue lately with k3b. during the last 2 weeks it went from running perfectly to displaying this message.
Code:

No optical drive found.
K3b did not find any optical device in your system.
Solution: Make sure HAL daemon is running, it is used by K3b for finding devices.

I've been digging around on here for about a week now have already found a few posts that I feel are close to my problem, but not quite.
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-821438.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-810841.htm

If I try to run k3b from the root command line I receive this error as well.
Code:
roslin harrisj # k3b
<unknown program name>(24433)/: KUniqueApplication: Cannot find the D-Bus session server:  "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."

<unknown program name>(24432)/: KUniqueApplication: Pipe closed unexpectedly.

Here is a list of things that are asked for in those forum posts:

Code:

also one of the other posts mentioned the issue could be from not using emerge -DuvaN world and revdep-rebuild -i
I Follow this exact update order every 3 days.
Code:

# eix-sync
# emerge -DuvaN world
# etc-update
# emerge -a --depclean
# revdep-rebuild -i
# eclean -d distfiles

I am currently going to attempt an emerge -e world system and see what that brings though according to others posts it didnt help them any so I am not hopeful. The DVD drive runs perfectly in all other aspects so I do not think this is a hardware failure I think somewhere along the like I destroyed a symlink or a configuration file got nuked. Either way I am out of ideas and can really use your input!! thanks.

I would:
emerge dbus and add it to default runlevel
add udev and policykit to USE flags
add udev to sysinit runlevel if not there
unmask and emerge devicekit
re-emerge k3b -uND (or world)

disclaimer I do not specifically know this problem or its answer

Ok, I've figured it out. hopefully this may help others too.

I have a failry old cdrom, approx 9 - 10 years. and it uses IDE.
I built the cdrom into my 2.6.33 kernel using :
Code:
    Device Drivers -->
            ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support (DEPRECATED) -->
                    Include IDE/ATAPI CDROM support

At the time I figured it was only way I was going to get my old, crusty cdrom to work. a few weeks ago I switched to 2.6.34, first via vanilla-sources, and then to the gentoo-sources when it finally came down the tubes.
----
K3b & hal didn't mind the deprecated drivers in 2.6.33.
They didn't like them in 2.6.34 however.

After a bit more digging I realized I could support my cdrom with something not deprecated:
Code:
    Device Drivers -->
            Serial ATA and Parallel ATA drivers -->
                    ATA SFF support -->
                            ATI PATA support

After a reboot everything is working good.
(props to a good friend on that one)

Thanks for the advice donahue, I should have researched this issue a bit more before posting but the input is always appreciated :)

if you remember the bad news bears line about assume-- I assumed you knew the problem was isolated to k3b; thought about but did not ask if you could use it outside k3b

actually it was isolated to k3b, your assumptions were correct. I could still mount cd's, watch dvd's etc... The fact that I didn't loose the drive altogether with the 2.6.34 upgrade was the reason I didn't consider the kernel issue at first. The drive remained completely reliable and functional through the upgrade... for everything but k3b of course.

good to know, i feel less of an xxx. That a top level program would be affected by which of two functional kernel drivers is used sounds more like windows than linux. Would never have guessed that connection.

I wouldn't have made the connection either, a friend of mine had apparently come across this issue in the past when
he switched to vanilla-sources-2.6.34-rc5 a few months back. He pointed me in the right direction.

I'm having the same issue, changing the kernel settings didn't seem to help. Running 2.6.34-rc3 Vanilla sources.

That specific error only comes up when I attempt to run the program under root. When I run it as a standard user, it at least runs, but finds no devices.

I had the same problem: k3b wouldn't find my (ATAPI) DVD burner. After several days of browsing and trying and whatnot, I found NeddySeagoons ICH10-guide (even though I have an ASUS board with nforce2 chipset) that mentioned the need to not only enable the correct SATA/PATA drivers in the libata section of the kernel config but also explained that IDE devices will now be treated the same as SCSI devices in the 2.6.34 approach. Thus, I needed to enable SCSI CDROM support in order for my drive to be recognized...

Maybe this helps anyone with similar problems... ;)

I solved it, it's covered in this thread.

However, I have this issue on a different machine.

I have this controller:

Code:
00:06.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation CK804 IDE (rev f2)

And I'm not seeing a NVIDIA PATA option in the kernel.

2.6.34-Gentoo-r1 kernel

<*> AMD/NVidia PATA support

CONFIG_PATA_AMD:

│ This option enables support for the AMD and NVidia PATA
│ interfaces found on the chipsets for Athlon/Athlon64.

│ If unsure, say N.

│ Symbol: PATA_AMD [=y]
│ Prompt: AMD/NVidia PATA support
│ Defined at drivers/ata/Kconfig:240
Depends on: ATA [=y] && ATA_SFF [=y] && PCI [=y] you may be missing one of these if you don't have this choice, I'm also on 2.6.34-r1
│ Location:
│ -> Device Drivers
│ -> Serial ATA and Parallel ATA drivers (ATA [=y])
│ -> ATA SFF support (ATA_SFF [=y])

Guh, thanks.

Them putting AMD in front of it made it harder to find.

So after messing around with this for about 6 hrs and borking my 2.6.34 kernel requiring me to boot from knoppix... Is there any way to get any version of k3b to work with 2.6.32.9? I was perfectly happy with that and I just need to burn a dvd backup.

I tried k3b-1.70.0_beta1 with 2.6.32.9 and still got the "no optical drive found" so I'm guessing it isn't directly related to k3b but something else that was updated during my upgrade to kde 4.4.4?

recompile and recopy kernel to /boot
change all /dev/hd* entries in /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/grub.conf to /dev/sd*
support for the legacy drivers is ending, forcing migration to the libata drivers. In particular automount of removable media with legacy drivers is gone and this is likely the direct cause of your problem.

Okay, I already tried those with 2.6.34 except I didn't enable NVIDIA SATA support since my machine doesn't support SATA. And I didn't change the entries in /etc/fstab and lilo.conf. I'll try again tonight.

Should it matter whether or not I have enabled the following?

ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support (DEPRECATED)

Because I think my kernel panic occurred after disabling that. But I'm not sure.

One complication is that I have an ssd that currently uses /dev/sda[1-3].

Code:
/dev/hda1       /windows        ntfs        noauto,ro       0 0
/dev/hda2       /boot           ext3        noauto,noatime  0 0
/dev/hda3       none            swap        sw              0 0
/dev/hda5       /               ext3        noatime         0 0
/dev/hda6       /home           ext3        noatime         0 0
/dev/hda7       /data           ext3        noatime         0 0
/dev/ssd1       /opt            ext4        noatime         0 0
/dev/ssd2       /mysql          ext4        noatime         0 0
/dev/ssd3       /ssd            ext4        noatime         0 0

The /dev/ssd1 is a symbolic link to /dev/sda1 (created by udev) and so on. So I'm not sure what will happen if I change the hda to sda- it seems that one will win.

Can we backtrack a second? I'm really not interested in updating anymore- no time. And I expect this machine to be replaced in the near future.

Do you know if there's any way to stay right where I am now with 2.6.32.9 and the legacy drivers and use some earlier version of k3b? k3b was working fine before I updated to 4.4.4, so is there anything I can possibly downgrade to make some earlier version of k3b work- other than the 300 packages that were compiled during my upgrade to 4.4.4?

Suggest boot a system rescue cd and run fdisk -l to see how a current kernel sees your drives. ssd

you might be able to regress udev and kernel version.

I followed one of the suggestions here of adding myself to group disk and that fixed the problem. I understand that's not the proper fix but that's okay. Thanks for your help!

This was I did to solve the problem. First I tried compiling many packages (kernel, k3b, etc, etc,) and none of it brought the solution. Once my user is member of disk group everything is fine again.

Greetings.
