was working fine about a week ago (maybe two). it's an occasionally used laptop so isn't tested much: i don't know what emerge -uD has pulled in over the last few days that has caused this new behavior.

symptoms: xfce4-session-logout causes hard lockup (unresponsive keyboard) 100% of the time, requiring hard reset (logout, reboot or shutdown all cause the freeze).

a simple "reboot" or "shutdown -h now" from a terminal works fine though, so it's something xfce4-session-logout is doing: yet i don't think xfce has been updated for a while, whereas i think xorg-server has (1.8.0 to 1.8.1, ???). before i mask xorg-server-1.8.1 and revert to the older version, is there anything else i should try first? i can't find any clues in the xorg logs and have already confirmed that it happens from startx as well as from slim. i read somewhere that xfce4-session-logout uses hal to logout, so have already tried removing/reinstalling hal and rebuilding the server with and without it, but this makes no difference at all.

anyone else using xorg-server-1.8.1, xfce, compiz and the free radeon driver, and NOT seeing this behavior?

must be why /var/log/emerge.log exist. this might help you to figure out.

lol. i guess i should have been clearer: "i don't think xfce has been updated for a while...(etc.)" = "i'm posting this from a different machine and don't have access to the laptop, but from memory xorg-server was the only thing on that box upgraded over the last few days that looked like it might have caused the problem"; != "i can't be bothered checking for myself what's been upgraded over the last few days so am asking someone to post a list of recent updates"!

basically i was just hoping someone might have already encountered and fixed this problem, saving me the trouble of downgrading a whole bunch of stuff just because it's been upgraded recently and could possibly be at fault. looks like no, so when i get back to the laptop, i'll be downgrading xorg-server, testing, downgrading something else, testing, etc., until the problem either goes away or i wind up with all the last couple of weeks' changes reversed and still a broken xfce! :)

it's weird because there must be lots of people running xfce+compiz+radeon, yet nobody else has developed this problem...maybe it's some other obscure little package getting in the way somehow... /me shrugs

I've encountered something similar with openbox and posted a bug report about it:

finally got some time to test everything systematically and identify the problem. it was the free radeon driver. the latest catalyst (fglrx) driver from ati works perfectly. it may be nasty proprietary code but at least now i can log out of X without hard lockups.
