There's a lot of posts info about bad glibc builds, but I can't find anything about this one that comes to a solution. :)

The error:

I'm having the same error.

What have you tried so far? From another thread, I thought it might be make, so I rebuilt make and then did a resync. No luck.

I rebuilt make, rebuilt binutils. Tried some legacy posts with fudgering my march and mtune. I'm stumped at this point.

Could you post the entire build log in a pastebin and link that from here? Also, can we get the output of emerge --info?

Regards,

Alunduil

The complete build log was too big for pastebin (~5MB). Get it here instead:

Any help is appreciated. I don't update world all that often, and this is the first item in the queue!

Now just hold on one minute. Both of you have hijacked my thread and neither have the same error as me.

I personally cannot upload my complete log file since it is 6.5mb. If I knew where to upload such a large file I would. What else should I try rebuilding?

Why don't you think it's the same error? It looks like it's bombing out in the same place for all of us.

I'm BrentNorin on this one, those are three (very) different errors.

BrentNorin: have you tried disabling ccache (or cleaning the cache and restarting)?

TheHistorian: internal compiler error: do you get the exact same error in the exact same spot each time you run this? Those are usually transient, very often linked to bad RAM, overheating/overclocking (or over aggressive CFLAGS but the ebuild probably filters them out) or such. Try with -O2 rather than -O3 anyway, might help.

alexerre: that one's real strange. Not sure we're seeing the root error in your log. Can you try rebuilding sandox?

Show's what I know. :D

That's why I ask for help! Thanks - that's a couple leads to try out.

avendesora, you are my hero. I cleared my ccache and was able to build glibc. Now onto my new xorg. :) Thanks!

I took a look and yes, it fails in the same spot each time. My CFLAGS are already -O2, not -O3.

TheHistorian,

Time to run memtest from a CD.

Check the CPU temperature and carefully clean the CPU heatsink/fan with a stiff natural bristle brush, so you avoid the risk of static (and fan bearing) damage that comes with compressed air.

memtest finding errors does not always mean your RAM is dead. The motherboard and CPU are also used in the testing.
If you do get errors, tell us about them

Just to be sure: this is the error in what you posted:
Code:
pthread_attr_setschedpolicy.c:47: internal compiler error: in pop_scope, at c-decl.c:856

this part:
Code:
make: *** [all] Error 2

 *   make for default failed
 *
 * Call stack:

 *   src_compile.eblit, line  207:  Called toolchain-glibc_src_compile

 *

 * the complete build log and the output of 'emerge -pqv =sys-libs/glibc-2.10.1-r1'.
 * The complete build log is located at '/var/log/portage/sys-libs:glibc-2.10.1-r1:20100502-154133.log'.
 * The ebuild environment file is located at '/var/tmp/portage/sys-libs/glibc-2.10.1-r1/temp/environment'.
 * S: '/var/tmp/portage/sys-libs/glibc-2.10.1-r1/work/glibc-2.10.1'

>>> Failed to emerge sys-libs/glibc-2.10.1-r1, Log file:

>>>  '/var/log/portage/sys-libs:glibc-2.10.1-r1:20100502-154133.log'

is actually "irrelevant" (except for the log file name) - it only tells where in the ebuild it fails, which will in essentially all cases be the src_compile function.

Do you get that exact same topmost build error all the time (same .c files, same functions, same line numbers) ?

Well, this is a laptop, so physical mucking around isn't trivial... can you explain what you're seeing in what I posted that leads you to think it could be memory related?

TheHistorian,

Internal Compiler Errors are rarely gcc. Everyone uses gcc to build their systems, not just gentoo and if gcc was broken, it would be broken for everyone, not just you. The same is true for the other software used to build packages. That only leaves hardware.

Frequent causes of hardware issues are overclocking, overheating and assorted RAM issues. There are others.
Many laptops are badly undercooled - they have build in overheating issues.

Before you try hardware diagnosis, try the following.
1. Disable ccache if you use it. It could have a corrupt cache file and be returning bad results to gcc.
2. grep the build log /var/tmp/portage/sys-libs/glibc-2.10.1-r1/temp/build.log for the first error, or keep a copy of the log for later.
3. clear /var/portage/tmp/ so make does not reuse old binaries from the failed build.

Repeat the above process a few times to determine if the error is identical and in identical places.
For this process, its important that you do not reuse any old files.

Support the laptop on two thick books at the edges, so air can get underneath to help the cooling.

If the errors are reproducible, its a hardware issue. Investigate with a few cycles of memtest

Hmm, now it built okay. What I did:

emerge update world
failed, so masked that version of glibc

emerge update world again
successfully built some packages before bombing out on something else:
media-libs:jpeg-8a:20100504-182315.log
dev-libs:expat-2.0.1-r3
sys-devel:gnuconfig-20100122
sys-devel:autoconf-wrapper-8
app-arch:cpio-2.10-r1
sys-apps:miscfiles-1.4.2-r1
sys-devel:automake-wrapper-4
sys-libs:timezone-data-2010b
dev-libs:libffi-3.0.9
dev-libs:nspr-4.8.4
app-arch:unrar-3.9.7
app-misc:realpath-1.15
media-sound:alsa-headers-1.0.21
app-editors:gentoo-editor-2
net-analyzer:traceroute-2.0.12
net-dns:bind-tools-9.4.3_p5
sys-process:lsof-4.82
sys-apps:ethtool-0.6
dev-libs:gmp-4.3.2
sys-libs:ncurses-5.7-r3
media-libs:tiff-3.9.2-r1
sys-kernel:linux-headers-2.6.30-r1
virtual:ttf-fonts-1
dev-libs:libgcrypt-1.4.5
app-shells:bash-4.0_p37
sys-apps:sysvinit-2.87-r3
media-libs:x264-0.0.20091021

unmasked glibc
emerge update world
now glibc built cleanly

No idea... but now I'll look at the next broken item. :D

Thanks for the help - if I keep getting similar errors, I'll investigate the memory checks you've recommended.

It turns out that you were (of course) right and I did find a bad DIMM. Now to see how good that lifetime warranty is!

Thanks to both avendesora and NeddySeagoon - I should never have doubted the wisdom of this forum. I should sick you on a couple really of my really weird bugs!

alexerre,

The missing symbols you have encountered
Code:
nscd.c:(.text+0x1b7): undefined reference to `__guard'
nscd.c:(.text+0x1d3): undefined reference to `__stack_smash_handler'
are related to hardened systems but you are apparently not using anything hardened.
I'm not sure what the USE flag hardenedphp does for you.

glibc-2.3.6-r5, and 2.6.19-gentoo-r3 are both very old

You may not be able to go to directly to glibc-2.10.1-r1.

Update both the kernel and gcc to some intermediate versions. If that works, update them again to current versions.

You may need to get the ebuilds from the attic as they will have gone from the live tree by now.

Right. I remove flag hardened.

Ouch! An error. Just fixed. Thanks :)

Uhm...Can you explain me how to do (or link some document/tutorial)?

Thanks

alexerre,

A look in the portage tree shows the following versions of glibc are available.
Code:
 /usr/portage/sys-libs/glibc $ ls
ChangeLog  glibc-2.10.1-r1.ebuild  glibc-2.2.5-r10.ebuild  glibc-2.6.1.ebuild             glibc-2.9_p20081201-r2.ebuild
Manifest   glibc-2.11-r1.ebuild    glibc-2.5-r4.ebuild     glibc-2.7-r2.ebuild            glibc-2.9_p20081201-r3.ebuild
files      glibc-2.11.1.ebuild     glibc-2.5.1.ebuild      glibc-2.8_p20080602-r1.ebuild  metadata.xml

When you do
Code:
emerge -1 glibc
portage finds the highest unmasked version for you but you can give portage a version that you would like.
There are several ways - as this is only a stepping stone to the current version, do it on the command line. Portage will not remember this. To make it permanent, read
Code:
man portage
the section about /etc/portage/package.mask (you don't want to go this just now)

To tell portage you want an exact version, use
Code:
emerge -1 =glibc-2.6.1
to attempt to build glibc-2.6.1. The -1 means --oneshot, which does not add the package(s) to your wold file. If that works, reboot to use the new glibc then try
Code:
emerge -1 glibc
again.

The kernel is a little different. emerge gentoo-sources only adds the sources to /usr/src, you have to configure, build and install the kernel yourself.
I'll refer you to kernel-seeds.org for that. Post questions in Pappys sticky thread in the Unsupported Software forum.
