Hi,
Got a problem where xscreensaver crashes X after a little while. For example, I came to my computer this morning after I'd locked it last night, and it was crashed. No keyboard action, can't even turn the Num Lock light on or off.

Code:
$ emerge -pv xscreensaver xorg-server xf86-video-intel

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] x11-base/xorg-server-1.8.0  USE="hal nptl udev xorg -dmx -doc -ipv6 -kdrive -minimal -static-libs -tslib" 0 kB
[ebuild   R   ] x11-misc/xscreensaver-5.10  USE="jpeg opengl pam -new-login -suid -xinerama" 0 kB
[ebuild   R   ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.11.0  USE="dri" 0 kB

Total: 2 packages (2 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 0 kB

Does anybody else have that problem?

I had a similar problem not too long ago, but I don't remember which on machine of mine it was. I do know that the problem was not actually xscreensaver, but something with X itself. I probably solved it (again, bad memory here) by doing emerge -e world, so give that a try and let us know if it works.

I figured I'd give this a go, not having any better ideas. I set it going before the weekend, and it's still chugging away in the background!! (to be fair, it spent most of that time crashed out while I wasn't around to reboot and resume).

With just 5 packages to go, I hope I'll be able to report success / failure fairly soon...

It doesn't work!

I notice that 2 of my /var/log/kernel/* end with a segfault in conftest.

Code:
==> kernel/log-2010-05-10-11:05:59 <==
May  7 18:34:17 [kernel] conftest[549]: segfault at 80 ip 0000003bbf42abdf sp 00007fffbc513720 error 4 in libc-2.10.1.so[3bbf400000+14c000]
May  7 18:34:44 [kernel] conftest[7396]: segfault at 40 ip 000000004b765fab sp 00000000ffe94668 error 4 in libc-2.10.1.so[4b743000+13e000]

Code:
May 10 13:00:36 [kernel] test_1234[2096]: segfault at 7f5a00000001 ip 0000000000400679 sp 00007fffee7583f0 error 4 in test_1234[400000+1000]
May 10 17:15:09 [kernel] conftest[23645]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp 00007fff5aae2118 error 14 in conftest[400000+1000]

Might not be anything to do with this, but it's the only sign of unrest I can find (aside from the actual crashing of course).

I've now decided, almost at random, to entirely remove HAL from my system. I'll let you know if that works...

If you use X, you need hal.

Which you've probably figured out by now when X won't let you use your input devices.

I discovered this in my warnings compiling xorg-server, I hope it will not fail.

Usage of hal is strongly discouraged. Please migrate to udev.
From next major release on the hal support will be fully disabled.
Both hal and udev flags are enabled.
Enabling only udev!

Just rebooted HAL-less, and I'm relieved that X still works. I'll have to leave it a while to check the screensaver...

Man, I'm not moving to hal cause I fear it will not do things hot pluggable. Is that true?

It is supposed to do hotplugging, however: from from http://www.x.org/wiki/XorgHAL
Quote:
Since the HAL project has stopped development and deprecated itself, X.Org is planning to move off HAL in the future. Support for udev instead of HAL is available in X Servers 1.8 and later and enabled by default, pending platform availability. As HAL was also used for input device configuration, a new feature has been added to X Server 1.8 to support configuration snippets in the xorg.conf.d directory. Instead of udev rules, users and distributions are encouraged to use the xorg.conf.d for configuration. Old-style xorg.conf configuration is still available.

After all this craziness, I tried the simplest thing (should have done this to start with!!) and restricted xscreensaver to one simplistic screensaver (rocks), and it hasn't crashed all this weekend. I conclude it is certain screensavers / graphics demands that are causing the issue. However, when I lock the screen it is perfectly happy to do eg. openGL screensavers for at least a short amount of time.

Anyway, I can get the missing "lock screen" functionality back by just sticking to rocks, so that's what I'll do.

HAL's on its way out, but for the moment I don't think it does any harm (notice, removing it didn't solve my problem).

Dude, it does do major harm!

My HID is no longer hotpluggable and absolutely NOTHING is hotpluggable. :(

I had to start dbus to get me logging in.

I now have to manually mount things.

Emerging devicekit to see if that helps.

Sorry, I meant I don't think keeping it does any harm (for the moment)...

Well I reverted back, and I will try the setup of xorg 1.7 without HAL and try hotplugging.

I'd stick with HAL enabled until you until you upgrade to xorg-server-1.8

It might simply be that you need to re-emerge your graphics driver after having upgrading xorg.

Code:

qlist -I -C x11-drivers

will show you what drivers you have installed, then emerge them and see if that fixes it.

I didn't mention it, but I did make sure that my drivers were compiled against the current X.

Thanks,
J.
