|
|
This is a rather long post but it is about a lot of things I did.
Nvidia drivers > 180.60 result in a blank screen in X.
The Acer monitor is connected with a DVI cable to the card.
About a week ago there was an upgrade of xorg-server which needed
an nvidia driver higher than 180.60.
I removed the >180.60 line from /etc/portage/package.mask and
emerged all that emerge -uD world considered necessary.
Result blank screen.
Downgrading didn't work but I had a backup of my /.
I googled and searched until blue in the face but I couldn't find anything.
The "funny" thing was that /var/log/xorg.log didn't show any errors.
I have a small partition with Gentoo on it which I use as a fallback
and to experiment with dangerous stuff.
I continued on that one.
Tried all kinds of things with xorg.conf, all to no avail.
Both monitor and card also have a VGA outlet.
I thought why not try the VGA connection.
Bingo I got my kde again.
I'd prefer to have the DVI connection however.
Upon closer examination of xorg.log I came across this (snippet) Code: |
(II) Apr 20 17:28:56 NVIDIA(0): Support for GLX with the Damage and Composite X extensions is
(II) Apr 20 17:28:56 NVIDIA(0): enabled.
(II) Apr 20 17:28:57 NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU GeForce 7600 GS (G73) at PCI:6:0:0 (GPU-0)
(--) Apr 20 17:28:57 NVIDIA(0): Memory: 524288 kBytes

(==) Apr 20 17:28:57 NVIDIA(0): will be used as the requested mode.
(==) Apr 20 17:28:57 NVIDIA(0): |
CRT-1 doesn't exist so the video signal is just lost.
With driver 180.60 and DVI connection this part looked like this Code: |
II) NVIDIA(0): Support for GLX with the Damage and Composite X extensions is
(II) NVIDIA(0): enabled.
(II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU GeForce 7600 GS (G73) at PCI:6:0:0 (GPU-0)

(==) NVIDIA(0):
(==) NVIDIA(0): No modes were requested; the default mode "nvidia-auto-select"
(==) NVIDIA(0): will be used as the requested mode.
(==) NVIDIA(0): |
In the nvidia docs I found something that might solve it I thought.
Code: | Section "Screen"

Monitor "Monitor0"
Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP-0"
SubSection "Display"

The result was this Code: |

I also tried CRT-0 instead of DFP-0 no luck.
I am now using the VGA connection.
You find a lot of negative publicity about this Acer monitor.
I bought it 3 years ago for €700 with 3 years pickup and return warranty.
I had to sent it back 3 times.
The colors however are very good so I'd rather not buy another one.
I hope someone will know what needs to be done to get back to DVI again.
I'll be very grateful for help.

Hi Rexilion,
Thanks for replying.
Years ago I've used modelines;
I'll try it but I doubt that it will resolve this.
Anyway here's the damn thing's EDID: Code: |
# EDID version 1 revision 3
Section "Monitor"
# Block type: 2:0 3:fd
# Block type: 2:0 3:fc
Identifier "AL2423W"
VendorName "ACR"
ModelName "AL2423W"
# Block type: 2:0 3:fd
HorizSync 31-81
VertRefresh 56-75
# Max dot clock (video bandwidth) 170 MHz
# Block type: 2:0 3:fc
# Block type: 2:0 3:fe
# DPMS capabilities: Active off:yes Suspend:no Standby:no
Mode "1920x1200" # vfreq 59.950Hz, hfreq 74.038kHz
DotClock 154.000000
HTimings 1920 1968 2000 2080
VTimings 1200 1203 1209 1235
Flags "-HSync" "+VSync"
EndMode
# Block type: 2:0 3:fd
# Block type: 2:0 3:fc
# Block type: 2:0 3:fe
EndSection |
I wonder,could I use these Mode lines ?

I haven't changed anything yet.

The gentoo I am using now is with the VGA connection.
To continue troubleshooting I'll have to reboot into the other one.

Okay, so I assume that you are using the xorg.conf you provided to help debug it.
Try to use the 'damn thing's EDID' in your xorg.conf. Note, that is not really an EDID: it's an EDID in xorg.conf format. If there is a bug in interperting this EDID, then this block contains it but it's always worth a shot . |

Thanks Rexilion,
I have to let this rest for a while because I have to leave town.
I'll be back though.

Hi Rexilion,
The problem is the combination of 7600 GS and nvidia-drivers > 180.60.
I am ordering a newer card:BRAVO 220 SILENT/DI/1GD2(LP) (NVIDIA GeForce GT 220).
Delivery will take a cple of days.
I'll post the result here.
Thanks for your time.

Well the new card didn't solve the problem.
I'm not sorry I spent the money though.
I can now use vdpau which wasn't possible before.
The monitor is now VGA connected like before but now it's named CRT-1!
I really don't know what else to do.

Frustrating :/
Did you try the new card with an empty xorg.conf? |

I did.
But that makes X use "nv" which is no option.
I don't know if it that would allow for DVI connection.
I wonder if it has anything to do with my kernel .config.
I will experiment some more.

Well couldn't find anything in the kernel.
I downloaded Sabayon-5.2 and Kubuntu-10.4.
Then I connected with DVI.
Sabayon gives the same result.
I checked the Xorg.log it produced and it's similar to what I get.
Then I inserted the Kubuntu CD and waited for the screen to go black.
But it worked!
I then checked it's Xorg.log:They use nouveau and not nvidia-drivers.
I am quite sure now it has to do with nvidia-drivers.
Apparently there is no nvidia bugzilla so I don't know where to report it.
I am willing to install nouveau but I doubt that it'll perform as well as nvidia.

You are correct: Nouveau won't perform as well as nvidia. For your question about a bugreport, I heard that the nvidia developers sometime scout the nvforums. Perhaps you can give it a shot there. |

I decided to replace my ~3yrs old system with something new.
I ordered a new monitor separately which came today.
It's an HP LP2475w.
And I can connect it digitally w/o any problem.
Xorg log shows it's connected to DFP-0.
So it's definitely something peculiar to the Acer monitor.
