I've been doing a lot of research on getting the fglrx driver to do dual monitors for my laptop. Thanks to http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/X.Org/Dual_Monitors/ATI I have a pretty good idea of how I want to try and get it working.

Since I'm using XDM/KDM, though, and I won't be set up with a dual monitor all of the time, is there a way I can set it up to automagically detect if another screen is plugged in or set the monitor config in such a way that I don't have to keep restarting X every time I need to have a single/dual monitor?

This article seems to have something that I can try. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work in big desktop mode.
