PostPosted: Mon Apr 26, 2010 12:48 pm    Post subject: emerge generates segmentation fault Reply with quote

this morning - out of the blue as a gift from the gentoo gods -
when I ran emerge -uDav world, I received this after a *long wait*:

Calculating dependencies /Sandboxed process killed by signal: Segmentation fault
... done!

Then everything appeared to proceed normally.

Anyone know what's going on? TIA>

What have you updated lately? Bash, sandbox, toolchain, glibc? Anything?

none of those and nothing else I can think of. I note that
emerging individual packages I don't get the error, only
emerge world ... :? Or perhaps there is a package somewhere
for whose the dependency calculation is broken and the
emerge world is "hitting" that package.

Yes - there is such a package.

emerge -av nvidia-drivers creates the long delay
then error messages (in dmesg) and then normal
behavior (I can re-emerge the driver).

a resync did not help

thanks for making me look through recent package installs ...

That's wacky.

Yeah, but nothing portage does should cause a segfault like that.

Like NathanZachary says, post the emerge --info.

You and I have very similar configurations (even the same kernel). Nothing jumps out though.

This has me wondering:

Quote:
emerge -av nvidia-drivers creates the long delay
then error messages (in dmesg) and then normal
behavior (I can re-emerge the driver).

Could your hard drive be dying?

Another thought: You might try to fsck your root partition as well.

hard drive failure always possible - I'll try to use SMART

fsck turned up nothing

distcc and march=native = roll a dice...

march=native = your current cpu optimization

distcc build something1 part in your computer -> march=native -> march=core2 cpu
distcc send to build something2 part in another computer (let's say a pentium2) -> march=native -> march=pentium2 and worst, chost x86...

except if your computers helpers are also core2 with chost also x86_64 you'll get into trouble...
and don't forget an amd64 helper running 64bits won't trouble you with x86_64, but still your core2 will dislike any code optimize with 3dnow and others stuff amd got.

We are both running Zen it seems. I'll try switching from BFS to CFS and see if it helps.

Looks like his distcc is disabled, like mine (I've got it installed, but don't use it):

Code:

distcc 3.1 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu [disabled]

Whenever I do use distcc, I have the same CFLAGS (specifically no march=native) on all participating systems. Shouldn't be that problem here.

P.S. Still segfaults with CFS

distcc disable because the daemon is disable only :D

if you look at mine, you'll see it's also disable, but my distcc is always working.
how: simple answer, distcc hosts using ssh, so distcc daemon is disable but working when another distcc sshing that computer.

so even portage says it's disable isn't proof distcc is...

leaving you with gcc, kernel, glibc in common

edit: lol, just saw newer portage says it's enable now :D

same thing here as of yesterday using

This was fixed quite a while ago. Distcc will not distribute any compilation which specifies -march=native.

Well, I think it's safe to say we can rule out a hardware problem, based on the fact that it is happening to several people.

In all cases, using the latest Zen kernel, amd64, same glibc, same bash and stable portage. Same as me, except I am having no problem. Only thing I see in common is all explicitly use a variant of the -msse cflag...set to either 4.0 or 4.1.

I think this one will be tough to solve.

Take a look at this, to see what we're talking about

eix and many if not all other seem normal
Code:
$ time emerge -pv eix

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] app-portage/eix-0.20.4  USE="bzip2 nls optimization sqlite -debug -doc -hardened -strong-optimization -tools" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

real   0m2.023s
user   0m1.874s
sys   0m0.090s

nvidia-drivers take forever
Code:
$ time emerge -pv nvidia-drivers

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies \
Sandboxed process killed by signal: Segmentation fault                       ... done!

[ebuild   R   ] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-195.36.24  USE="gtk (multilib) -acpi -custom-cflags" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

real   4m27.689s
user   1m59.320s
sys   2m17.389s

world also takes its time..
Code:
$ time emerge -pv world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies |Sandboxed process killed by signal: Segmentation fa... done!
[..packages..]
Total: 206 packages (206 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 114,679 kB

real   4m35.396s
user   2m6.245s
sys   2m17.364s
which is close to nvidia-drivers' time
also world and nvidia-drivers are the ones that return
Sandboxed process killed by signal: Segmentation fault
and I think we can say this is nvidia-drivers that causes that when emerging world..

So it seems nvidia-drivers seems to be the problem here

** There is also an emerge that's not seen in /var/log/emerge.log for some reason, that took place at Apr 26
I can see that one on elogv :

So, you are running ~amd64 then?

Don't know what it is, but there is something you all have in common that krinn and I don't. I'll just post my emerge --info. Maybe somebody will spot the common thing that is different:

Well - one difference is the linux-headers. So I unmasked
linux-headers and emerged version 2.6.33 and rebuilt
glibc.

But no joy :(

Seems to be related to https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=317297.

Unmerging zen-sources-9999 (still keeping and using the kernel source, though) worked for me.

great work, Nsane457

unmerging zen-sources-2.6.33_p1 fixes the problem
for me

now, just trying to emerge zen-sources again generates
the delay  and the errors (but works in the end nonetheless).

But why doesn't everyone with zen-sources have the problem???
