It finds things here because the block was removed two years ago. Aside from using the internal search function and a few other things that would be pointless for spiders to index they are allowed free rein. Additionally, the restrictions are mostly in place through robots.txt, only specific abusive bots have additional restrictions or even restrictions that are actually enforced on the server side (robots.txt, in and of itself, is reliant upon client side cooperation).

Any update or is this a stillbirth? Just asking because gentoo-wiki.com seems down...

I was writing a little in the de.gentoo-wiki.com lately and it's actual fun!
If there ever is a Gentoo Wiki, just let the people write the articles not a developers run documentation on a wiki platform... (the current documentation system was always too complicated to me).

Maintaining our user-exclusionary behavior, we will never launch http://wiki.gentoo.org, not even in a beta, it will always stay password-protected. Larry the Cow makes the saddest moo sound he can make, as he is so very sad about this.

<facepalm> How hard is it to grasp the concept of "community documentation" ? </facepalm>

Sarcasm doesn't transmit well on the Internet.

And given how long the wiki has taken to get to this stage, pardon my skepticism until it goes live.

It was not sarcasm, it was more a suggestion that interested users should be bold.

If you stop complaining for a moment and read through out a3li's post you will find the answer to your problem. Seem like you were not a fan of Star wars :)

I'm paying attention, but what he has said could be tell in a more clearer form:
Users will never have a free access to the wiki, it will stay restrict by password but you can use beta/moo as user/password to login.

Now that your private joke is over, maybe you could then answer to why "I" am complaining :

Did you pay attention to what he said yourself Hwoarang ?
Because I and maybe many users don't care to write to the wiki, so the login/pwd is not useful.
But seeing the wiki will remain close to public is something different, and i don't see that announce as something to be happy about.

Read one post above yours. The wiki is in private beta. Of course it will be publicly available once the beta phase is done

To all of you who realized how to gain access, stop talking here and go write some articles so we can do some real beta testing and releasing wiki to the public

a3li and Hwoarang

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you for making such a nice wiki.
I really like the GFX style, clean and clear.
I hope the wiki will gain much deserved attention and in the close future resurrect the Gentoo reputation of having extensive documentation.

If you'd like me to help with smth in particular there, tell me (e.g. on IRC, nick is the same)

Feel free to write about anything related to Gentoo.

We're going the other way around this time, Wiki first, coming up with policies, rules et. al. later.

Is there a policy on how this wiki will interact with the other Gentoo Wiki or with the official documentation?

There are, at this moment, little to no policies in place, and none on the special topic.
Feel free to start a discussion on that, maybe on one of the wiki talk pages? ;)

I'll start with ''translating'' the stuff I wrote on the other wiki and see if I get the idea of more articles. What bothers me a little is this bottom-up method currently going on lol

We have articles about how to configure a share on some mark of router but nothing about file systems at all or how to install Gentoo :D

disi,

I think that's to be expected. The developer-written official documentation covers the essential Gentoo topics (e.g., installation), Wikipedia covers the general Linux topics (e.g., filesystems), and the Arch wiki covers much of the day-to-day operation of Linux systems.

I think where the Gentoo wiki fits in is covering more technically difficult topics in which Gentoo users would be especially interested. You and I already covered how to make bootable USB sticks for loading firmware, another person wrote an article on LTSP, and I look forward to someone else writing replete articles on hardened systems and filesystem encryption.
