What are the odds of getting samba-TNG added to the portage mix? It would be nice to migrate my NT4 domain to Linux/Samba.

Samba-TNG is a fork of samba, which focuses on NT domain logons, but development is a little stalled at the moment, as luke is gone, and elrond is the only one hacking around TNG ...

you can check details at http://www.samba-tng.org/

One problem is, that the latest "release" is from 10-Jun-2001 ...
(They ARE developing, but changes are only in CVS)

So. your best chance would be to grab the cvs version, and compile it outside of portage ...
