Works well with xorg-server 1.7.6 but not with 1.8.0. Some sort of version mismatch.

just be careful on this board with ubuntu. it will destroy your ICH9 raid setup if you have any. i don't know why it does this, but if you power off your computer (unplug power cable or switch PSU from 1 to 0) the raid is restored. only distribution where this is happening is ubuntu.

Sorry for my lack of post, I was "busy"
So I have a working xserver 1.8 with these drivers and I have added the patch in my overlay. The trick was simply to fake the Xserver version to 1.7.5.1 
To get Catalyst 10.4 working on Xserver 1.8, you need to update the Gentoo-quebec overlay. After that, you can emerge xserver 1.8 (the xorg-server-1.8-r1 ebuild from my overlay)
NOTE : You need to add "x11-base/xorg-server ** **" in "/etc/portage/package.keywords". Simple security again not wanted installation...
Also, I want to say that I dont use compiz or thing like that so I can't test it. But I use a dual screen setup. |

Got it work without keyboard and mouse. i am using hal and udev.
is there à way to fix it without killing hal.if i do that i am killing My
sound card.step one fixed one step to go

I just added the overlay but when trying to use it I run into the little issue

Guess that ebuild has been removed but the Manifest is not properly updated.
I removed that ebuild from the Manifest and then there was another ebuid missing, ati-drivers-2.6.33.1.patch. After cleaning also that it merged just fine. Now I'll see if the driver is also working as expected  |

I also installed the ATI 10.4 rc driver set using the gentoo-quebec overlay, (version 8.721), on my Asus G73Jh, Radeon Mobility 5870 HD equipped laptop, and it works. I installed it using the 2.6.33-r1 gentoo kernel sources, (~amd64), and a patched 1.80 xorg-server installation, using the patch from this bug report. It all works fine with my KDE 4.4.2 desktop, active compositing is working, (although I need to re-enable it every time I login). Performance is definitely slower in comparison to a similarly equipped i7, nVidia GTX 280M, laptop, (nvidia-drivers-195.36.15), I was using, but I'm glad I'm off nVidia, and on ATI. I can wait for performance improvements, as well as the open source radeon driver to support this RV870 chipset. (The radeon driver, with 3d support, works well for my current Radeon Mobility 4670 HD, equipped laptop.)
I also tried the ebuild for installing the 8.723.1 driver from this Gentoo Bug report, which works, (once I remembered to "eselect opengl set ati", after the driver install). Interestingly enough, the masked portage 8.721 driver, along with this 8.723.1 driver both download driver archives called;

I guess I need that good luck since I have a G73JH too but I can't get it to work. I've tried all of the same patches (I too noticed the 8.723.1 and even got the eselect bit) via local overlay as well as gentoo-quebec, but it is not working for me and I am sad.
What combination did you finally get to work?
Also, if you wouldn't mind attaching your configs (2.6.33-r1, xorg.conf, make.conf) that would be great! |

ok, that's strange
hedmo, you have several choices:
1 *) don't use the evdev driver and explicitly choose the keyboard & mouse driver (that way you also could disable hal but you need it for your sound), perhaps you simply need to re-emerge the xf86-input-* drivers ?
2 *) use evdev and make sure that hal works correctly (re-emerge the driver perhaps that fixes it)
3 *) you could also try to use hal + the non-evdev driver
why doesn't your sound work ? you added alsasound to your default run-level ?

You're probably closer than you think to getting it to work. Anyway here's the steps I followed in order to get the latest ATI 10.4 beta driver working with my G73Jh. I'm not sure how far you've got, but I can outline the basic process including kernel config, xorg.conf, and finally installing the ATI 10.4 beta driver, and optionally, xorg-server 1.8.0, (cause that's what I'm using).

Make sure there isn't another xorg.conf file in your system, (like in the /etc/X11/ directory), which would stop the x server from loading the fglrx driver. You then just need to install the beta driver and optionally a patched xorg-server. Here's the easy way;
ATI 10.4 Beta Linux Driver / Xorg-Server 1.8.0 - gentoo-quebec overlay

The good folks that maintain the gentoo-quebec overlay, have done all of the work necessary to make it easy to install not only the 10.4 beta ATI driver, but also a patched xorg-server 1.8.0, to run with it. Although their ATI 10.4 beta driver ebuild installs the 8.721 version, I installed both 8.721, and 8.723.1, (from below), and I couldn't tell if there was any difference between them. So in order to use it you just need to, install and configure layman, and then;

Create the local overlay directory structure for the xorg-server ebuild, with;

You can check out the Gentoo fglrx wiki page, which does have some good information, although some of it is probably dated. The only thing I wouldn't do, is use the aticonfig program to setup your xorg.conf. I would wait until you have a working system to mess around with aticonfig. BTW, I see that the release of the 10.4 ATI Linux drivers has hit portage. So anyone wanting to install these drivers can do it the normal way under portage, (once you sync your tree). If you want to make the driver work with xorg-server 1.8.0, you still need to edit the ebuild, and install the patched xorg-server.

it's fine for me , i put oficial drivers on /usr/local/portage with name xxx-r1 , i delete line 27(!>=x11-base/xorg-server-1.8.0) and rebuild, it's not necessary the patch of 10.4 beta.
the same with xorg 1.8 ( to -r1) with patch, rebuild.
then re-emerge xorg-server and ati-drivers , and for the moment its running fine.
now it will try to do what they explain in this post https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-820551-highlight-udev.html

that segfault by chance was with accelerated apps ?
if yes - you better (please) post the step which was causing segfault for you since I'm getting segfaults on an regular basis with all accelerated apps (glxinfo, glxgears, etc.) and compositing except googleearth and can't figure out how to fix it 
so I could finally get over that problem
my card is a 5850 (in a desktop NOT mobility), ~amd64, gcc 4.3*, 4.4* or 4.5* - hardened or non-hardened - didn't make a change for me, switching between 2.6.32, 2.6.33, 2.6.34-rc* also didn't make a change
just make sure that you write it in a slightly bigger font + disclaimer and red font so that really no one taps right into that trap

Well... I followed the instructions to patch xorg-server-1.8.0 but I've got no success so far, the patched failed and I can't spot what could be wrong... This is the Patch Output

I would thank you guys a lot, since the driver isn't work properly with xorg-server-1.7.6 (Cairo dock gets flicker and so my videos from mplayer and vlc)

Well... I had realize previously the mistype in the patch header... But even fixing that the patch simply doesn't work with the same message I've posted... I don't know if this is the right place for discuss that, but since I don't know where else we could, I'm answering here...
Any ideas about why it isn't working?
P.S.: If there's a better place to discuss the patch to an overlay ebuild I would be glad to move my posts to it |

I don't understand how you could be getting a "file not found" error with your patch process. Maybe if you described what you are doing to enable emerging the patched xorg-server, we can debug the problem. I just used the xorg-server 1.8.0 from portage, and copied that directory to my local overlay to apply the patch. Did you do the same?
and hedmo, I'm still running hal on my system, automounting and a couple of other things wouldn't work unless I did. Some of the folks posting to the xorg-server 1.8.0 thread suggest that we'll need hal until at least KDE 4.6.

Regarding the version mismatch patch for the 1.8.0 build, I had the same problems as bruno (both the first and second posted versions of the 1.8.0-version-mismatch patch failed). I suspect it had something to do with errant characters being including in the cut and paste, as when I created my own patch and ran a diff against the two, the entire file differed, but the only visible difference was the timestamps. At any rate these steps fixed my compilation problem:
1. Try to emerge with bad patch and let it fail; this leaves the configure.ac file patched up to the point of the last good patch.
2. cd /var/tmp/portage/x11-base/xorg-server-1.8.0-r1/work/xorg-server-1.8.0/
3. cp configure.ac configure.ac.orig
4. Edit configure.ac, change the "1.8.0" on line 29 to "1.7.5.1" (minus the quotes) and save.
5. diff -u configure.ac.orig configure.ac > /usr/local/portage/x11-base/xorg-server/files/1.8.0-version-mismatch.patch
6. cd /usr/local/portage/x11-base/xorg-server
7. ebuild xorg-server-1.8.0-r1.ebuild digest
8. emerge xorg-server
That was all it took to get fglrx 10.4 running with xorg 1.8.0. That being said, I have yet to solve the original problem which sent me beating down this path, which is that my sparkly new video card refuses to work with compiz. Which leads me to my question:
Has anybody with an r800 chipset gotten AIGLX working, (as in it shows up in xvinfo)? I've tried every possible permutation of kernel, xorg and catalyst version, with no difference in outcome. My desktop works fine, as do my opengl apps, but for the life of me I can't get compiz working. Argh.
I've backed out of 1.8.0 and am running in a more "stable" configuration, using the main ati-drivers-10.4 and xorg-server-1.7.6, using a i5-750 with a Sapphire HD 5770 on a Gigabyte P55-USB3, if it matters.

after that what do glxinfo, glxgears, compiz-manager and/or compiz say when being executed ? any error messages in output of dmesg ? (I'm always getting an segfault and error 7 in libGL.so.1.2 FWIW)
fullscreen accelerated opengl apps result in a blackscreen for me (the only one I've tested was worldofpadman) - surprisingly googleearth works fine 
currently I'm also trying to get it running (for some time now) with ati-drivers 10.2-10.4 with xorg-server 1.6.5/1.7.6, core i7-860, ATI Radeon 5850 on Foxconn Bulldog II
