|
|
I have a p4 laptop.
The first time my power went down, was when I tried to emerge kde.
Since then, I have tried to emerge gnome ... same problem ...
and when I tried to emerge windowmaker, I got an error when checking the gcc compiler. It says something about unable to make binairies or something.
So what I tried was "emerge gcc", what finished without probs.
I tried again to emerge kde, and the power went down again.
Does anybody know anyway to fix my problem?
Thanks. |

Did you check the temperature? Some friends have had huge temperature problems with (especially cheap) laptops. They may simply poweroff/crash when overheated. Try forcing some extra cooling (eg. powerful external fan) _________________ Cheers

Try using emerge -p kde, to find out what parts it wants to install, then emerge subsections, like qt3, and arts seperately, giving the box a rest in between, so it's not running for hours and hours at a stretch.
Or you could stick it in a cold store
Another cause of 'Power Off', on desktop systems is unstable voltages from poor powersupplies.
You might network your laptop with another Gentoo machine and use distcc to do the actual compiling, though not all ebuilds play well with it. |

If my utp cable was long enough, I'd put it in my fridge
only strange thing is, that when I compiled my kernel, It also took hours and hours, and there was no problem.
Well, I'll try installing the packages seperatly. Wish me luck. |

Maybe it took so long because your cpu automatically clocked down because of overheating? It seems to make sense. But really, a forced external fan already can lower your temp by about 5-10 degrees C, so you still might try. _________________ Cheers

Ok, what I did now was emerge --resume
I put my laptop in the fridge.
Hope it works.
Thanks a lot. |

Beware of temperature shocks (for your HD) and condensing water!
In other words: the temperature in the fridge may be right, but other conditions (moist etc.) may not be extremely healthy to your laptop... _________________ Cheers

Yeah, I tried to only put it in when I felt my air exhausts became rather hot.
Anyway, it works ... a bit.
It still shut down out of itself.
I'll post a new subject, trying to find out how to "underclock" my laptop. |
