The gnome lock screen has been acting weird lately, I enter my password and hit enter, and after about five seconds it locks again. I then enter the password a second time, it unlocks, and I can continue doing whatever I like. Any idea on what's causing this?
I'm not using any GDM type things, just a command line and xinit to start it. |

I had a similar problem on a RHEL box at work that had been ran through a DISA stig. To put it simple it was modified pam files.
Check /var/log/messages /var/log/secure for clues as to what is going on with gnome-screensaver.
in my case it was a syntax error in pam_tally |
