layman -S gives this output, so I'm not sure if I should just unmerge what I've got, remove this overlay, and start with some other overlay.

remove this overlay and use the enlightenment overlay. Follow the instructions in gentoo wiki http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/E17
There might be clashes in package names. So, you will need to unmerge what you have installed.

What I'm afraid of is that, since this won't be the same overlay, I'll end up with two different versions on the same box. :/

Looks like it worked. Took a bit of faffing with elementary and enlightenment itself.
