What software do you have installed on your gentoo systems?

I am a computer science student and I have been running Windows on my computers for more than a decade. Last semester, some of my classmates suggested that I run Linux instead of Windows, but I did not have time to experiment with it outside of running virtual machines. It is now winter break, so I wiped my laptop's hard drive and installed Gentoo Linux. So far I have few applications installed relative to what I had installed on Windows, but I would like that to change. Very few of the applications I had on Windows run on Linux, so I want to learn what my options are in terms of software on Linux. Being a computer science student, I think dealing with native Linux applications would be more educational in terms of learning how things work, so I want to try to avoid running wine.

Anyway, while I was installing Gentoo on my laptop, I found out about /var/lib/portage/world, which gave me a list of all of the packages I had installed on my virtual machines so I could just pick the ones I wanted to emerge without having to guess the list off the top of my head. This was really helpful to me, but I am sure that full time Linux users have many more applications on their lists and since I have time to experiment I was wondering if you guys would share the contents of your /var/lib/portage/world files with me so I can get ideas for software to try.
