Try with an xorg.conf generated by: Code: | X -configure ; X -config /root/xorg.conf.new |
if it works, then use that as your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Make sure hald, dbus, and consolekit (for Gnome or KDE4) are started.
also please post your emerge --info
and the output of rc-status |

not much to add, but
might do "X -retro -config /root/xorg.conf.new"
man Xserver wrote: |
-retro starts the stipple with the classic stipple and cursor visible. The default is to start with a black root window, and to suppress dis-
play of the cursor until the first time an application calls XDefineCursor(). For the Xorg server, this also sets the default for the
DontZap option to FALSE. For kdrive servers, this implies -zap.
|
Have seen a chunk of users getting confused and thinking their X didn't work even though it did; adding -retro seems to make it more obvious to them that it works
Might also be worth emerging 'twm' and 'xterm' just for clear visual confirmation that indeed X will work once you put gnome/kde/xfce/whatever on
andddddddd if that doesn't work....well, Intel Mobile 4 is very common, heaps of us can help you get it sorted _________________ Lost configuring your system?

yep, that means X is working. Now we just need to get a desktop environment/window manager working for you
Have you emerged gnome or kde or anything yet?
If not, you are ready to, since we know X itself is functional.
EDIT: you DO need to
Code: | cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf |
before things will work normally _________________ Lost configuring your system?

matttah wrote: | yep have full kde-meta installed already(kde4) when i run kdm nothing happens though. |
okie doke
so do this
-add 'xdm' to the default runlevel with
Code: | rc-update add xdm default |
-edit /etc/conf.d/xdm, and change DISPLAYMANAGER so that:
Code: |
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"
|
-look at /etc/X11/Sessions, and find the name of the KDE session (it should either be "kde-4.3" or simply "KDE-4"
if it is 'kde-4.3' then do:
Code: | echo "XSESSION=kde-4.3" >> /etc/env.d/90xsession |
if it is 'KDE-4' then do:
Code: | echo "XSESSION=KDE-4" >> /etc/env.d/90xsession |
Then go ahead and give 'er a reboot. KDM should show up, and you should be able to login. _________________ Lost configuring your system?
