Hi *,

Amarok 1.4 has been removed but there is no 2.x version marked as stable for PPC. This whole mess with package versions being masked/removed without a stable alternative (cf. KDE4) is starting to annoy me big time. Anybody around who is able to explain this mess?

Cheers,
Thomas

There's been a bug for rekeywording Amarok for PPC open 4 months now, https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=280552.

You could help them by testing it, and reporting on the bug?

Strange. I checked the bugs page with "ALL amarok ppc" beforehand. Guess what? I did not get a single, even remotely, relevant result. How would I know about this keyword request?

Anyway, that does not matter because issue at hand is a question that nobody seems to ask. How can such an incident pass any serious quality control? It makes no sense whatsoever to remove support for a certain software version unless there is a valid replacement version. If this is indeed Gentoo policy then it needs to be addressed, because it is plainly daft. Just think of somebody smart having the grand idea to mask/remove GCC or portage on a certain architecture. That'll be fun! If it is not Gentoo policy but just an unsynchronised action of some Gentoo groups/guys/gals, well, it obviously needs fixing.

Cheers,
Thomas

PS Well, yes, I really could check out the 2.x version if it did not require a plethora of non-ppc module versions or ~ppc versions. So, thanks, but no thanks, I'll pass.

Obviously my critique is not worth a reply. Thanks for that.

I've offered you a way to help yourself, that wasn't obviously good enough. Nothing left to say.

Next time when you want to patronise somebody, do it to your kids. You are not answering to my critique and don't even bother reading postings in full. That is certainly not what people can expect from somebody carrying the label "Developer" here in the forum. Don't waste your precious time responding, it won't be helpful anyway.

Anybody else around who cares to respond?

It looks like they're working on it. There's a post from a PPC developer in that bug report saying that the build currently fails.

It's being worked on, but what ssuominen suggested is pretty much exactly what I would have said and is hardly being patronizing. The PPC team is pretty understaffed and we're working on fixing our open bugs as quickly as possible. The current builds do not work on PPC. Since KDE3/QT3 was removed from the tree, there is no stable version at the moment. There's not much else to say.

Sorry it's inconvenienced you but we will get it fixed in the near future.

If you want something done in a fixed time frame, you do it yourself. Otherwise you wait with patience, and be grateful someone else does the job for you. That's how open source works, like it or not. :P

In this case it's also question of actually owning the hardware, so I could also argue you that if you buy me a PowerPC I'll get it done faster.

The kinks have been worked out of Amarok on unstable and all of the deps have been marked at least ~ppc. If you'd like, you can try testing it on stable using /etc/portage/package.keywords.

Unfortunately, ppc64 still has some issues (ld generating a TOC that prevents compilation) so it will still be a bit longer for ppc64.

Hi Joseph,

in the meanwhile I have removed amarok from my system. PM to you about some comments here is on its way in order to not turn this subject into a thread about worldviews. :D

Cheers,
Thomas
