Okay, I did a fresh upgrade to xorg 1.7.3.901. I'm gonna have to take this on at some point. No version of xorg 1.7.x has worked with my computer yet. Last version I had that functioned was xorg 1.6.5.
I did an emerge -auvND world, which included xorg-server and xorg-x11. No problems with that.
Then emerged the drivers for X to include nvidia-drivers (I have 2 nvidia cards). No problems.
Ran revdep-rebuild which took care of a few things, again no problems.
Start gdm, everything looks good. Log in, X starts to run (by this I mean I get the opening screen of enlightenment) then everything locks up. Screen freezes, mouse no longer moves, keyboard will not respond.
If I try 'startx enlightenment' from the console the nvidia drivers kick in, then it's just black. Nothing happens.
If I fire up gdm and wait without attempting to log in, X will eventually (10 seconds or so) lock up.
xorg.0.log and xorg.conf follow. I do not use hal, so xorg is compiled with -hal use flag.

| There was a long thread about xorg-server-1.7 and nvidia-drivers right here a couple of weeks ago. It looks like they solved this issue. |
