I have the viewsonic VP171b monitor and the manual states that it has a horizontal sync of 30-82 and vertical of 50-85. When i put these numbers into XF86Config, i find that i get noise in the form of almost unnoticable, except on edges of windows and when the gnome logout goes grayscale, hoprizontal lines that appear to scroll up and down the screen. This is of course quite annoying. Any solutions?

Hallo,
what mas resolution does your monitor support? I also have Sony Flat Panel that uses a max resolution of 1024x768 and while setting up XF86Config I choose the option Generic LCD (1024x768) or something in that line. I didn't need to tweak the Monitor's frequency ranges.... and it works fine. YMMV

HTH

regards,

youve probably already tried this, but hows about using a lower resolution, using those same frequencies.

You can be guaranteed, the higher the resolution, the lower the refresh will go (hence the frequencies are ranges, not fixed values for your monitor)

Try setting your vertical to 50-60 or just 60. I tried a LCD briefly and even though it could support 75Hz vertical refresh it was happier and looked better at 60. My brother reports similar results with his.
