Hi, I think I have the same problem. some more details:

compiz-version is 0.8.4
when running compiz --replace I get:
compiz (core) - Error: Couldn't load plugin 'yes'

when running compiz-manager I get:
Checking for Xgl: not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 01:00.0 0300: 10de:0191 (rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present.
Checking for non power of two support: present.
Checking for Composite extension: present.
Comparing resolution (1680x1050) to maximum 3D texture size (8192): Passed.
Checking for nVidia: present.
Checking for FBConfig: present.
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Starting emerald

The visual effect is both the same:
the borders and titles from all windows dissapear, guess, thats what the window decorator does. (I want emerald running with compiz).
when using compiz-manager, emerald is started. when using compiz --replace, then not, but executing emerald --replace manually doesn't change anything.
need anymore info?
any ideas how to make emerald run? ( at least I guess emerald is the part not working here)

Greetings Christian

You can set up compiz to use emerald somewhere in the compiz configuration tool,
ccsm. That should be installed with compiz, though there's a separate simple-ccsm.

yeah, i know that. and emerald is running, but not working as expected. I can see that it's running in ksysguard, but the window borders and titles aren't there....

Window decorations are not enabled by default in compiz. Run ccsm and enable them.

I did that, but with no use. I thought that titlebar and windowborder are emerald's part. And i still think it's emerald's fault, because ksysguard says, that emerald is running, but with no visible effect.

I seem to have this exact same problem (but with an ati card and kde4). It started a while back and I have not been able to get compiz working sense then. Still works in gnome just fine so it seems something with kde. You guys all trying to use kde too?

Code:
xamindar@Whiterabbit ~/Documents $ compiz-manager
Checking for Xgl: not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 01:00.0 0300: 1002:7145 (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: not present.
Trying again with indirect rendering:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present.
Checking for non power of two support: present.
Checking for Composite extension: present.
Comparing resolution (1680x1050) to maximum 3D texture size (4096): Passed.
Checking for nVidia: not present.
Checking for FBConfig: present.
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Starting emerald

I'm pretty sure compiz works as my terminal gets its semi transparency when I try to launch it. It just doesn't allow any window decorations, emerald seems to freeze when launched and gtk and kwin decorators don't work either.

Here is the output of compiz-manager when run in gnome - and compiz works like a dream in gnome.

Code:

xamindar@Whiterabbit ~ $ compiz-manager
Checking for Xgl: not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 01:00.0 0300: 1002:7145 (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

If anyone can shed some light on what in kde4 is preventing compiz from working that would be GREAT.

Well, solved. Always the simplest things that take the longest to figure out. I just had to load ccsm and actually TURN ON THE PLUGINS! In kde, all options were disabled while they were what I set them to in gnome. Didn't realize it kept different config locations.
