I thought my sound system was working perfectly until
I tried mpg123 music.mp3 but got no sound and this error:

Code:
$ mpg123 01-lyle_lovett-natural_forces.mp3
[module.c:138] error: Failed to open module alsa: file not found
[module.c:138] error: Failed to open module sdl: file not found
[module.c:138] error: Failed to open module oss: file not found
[audio.c:180] error: Unable to find a working output module in this list: alsa, sdl, oss
[audio.c:527] error: Failed to open audio output module
[mpg123.c:779] error: Failed to initialize output, goodbye.

Of course, mpg123 --list-modules finds no modules present

alsamixer works fine; xine, mplayer, amarok etc play without problems but I'd
like mpg123 to work as well.

Here are my sound modules:

Code:
# lsmod | grep snd
snd_pcm_oss            39312  0
snd_mixer_oss          16280  1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_hda_codec_realtek   269724  1
snd_hda_intel          27752  1
snd_hda_codec          70888  2 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel
snd_pcm                86688  3 snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec
snd_timer              23576  1 snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc         10232  2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm

Here is emerge --info

Code:
# emerge --info

Sorry but I don't get your comment: /usr/lib/mpg123/output_alsa.so exists
and alsa is in my USE= in /etc/make.conf

There's a bug about it, with a patch.
It's only waiting to get into the tree.

 I should have looked there - thanks

[Edit: and the patched version works fine ]

I am not sure if this is the same, but there is a command line driven mp3 player in the universe repositories called "mpg321". It is listed as a a mpg123 compatible player. There is also an "mpg123" command line mp3 player in the multiverse repositories. This has several versions. The default mpg123 package uses OSS, but there is a version supporting esound and another supporting NAS. Hope this is what you were looking for.

mpg321 was a hack from Debian back in the days when mpg123 had licensing problems, it doesn't anymore.
mpg321 also doesn't support everything mpg123 now does.

I don't see any point at all in using mpg321 thesedays...

And mpg123's default is pulseaudio, then alsa, then jack, and after those oss, you can select what to use _without recompiling_ or _without installing different packages_ by simply switching a command line option at runtime...

So pretty sure nobody is looking for anything like that, ugh :P
