Hi,

In a moment of monumental stupidity, I accidentally deleted my world file (among other files in the /var directory).

Now when I try to emerge anything I get errors of the following sort (truncated):

Quote:
* Error: circular dependencies:

('ebuild', '/', 'x11-proto/xcmiscproto-1.1.2', 'merge') depends on
('ebuild', '/', 'sys-devel/autoconf-2.63-r1', 'merge') (buildtime)
('ebuild', '/', 'sys-devel/automake-1.10.2', 'merge') (buildtime)
('ebuild', '/', 'sys-devel/libtool-2.2.6a', 'merge') (buildtime)
('ebuild', '/', 'x11-misc/util-macros-1.3.0', 'merge') (buildtime)
('ebuild', '/', 'dev-libs/libxslt-1.1.24-r1', 'merge') depends on
('ebuild', '/', 'dev-libs/libgcrypt-1.4.4', 'merge') (buildtime)
('ebuild', '/', 'dev-lang/python-2.6.2-r1', 'merge') (buildtime)
('ebuild', '/', 'dev-libs/libxml2-2.7.3-r2', 'merge') (buildtime)
('ebuild', '/', 'app-admin/eselect-python-20090824', 'merge') (buildtime)
('ebuild', '/', 'sys-devel/autoconf-2.63-r1', 'merge') (buildtime)
('ebuild', '/', 'sys-devel/automake-1.10.2', 'merge') (buildtime)
('ebuild', '/', 'sys-devel/libtool-2.2.6a', 'merge') (buildtime)

Although everything works, it means I will not be able to upgrade or install new packages.

Is it possible to recover from this mess, or do I need to do a fresh install?

Any other major impact of having (partly) deleted the /var directory?

FYI, I kept a fairly minimal install (XFCE desktop, no KDE/Gnome etc).

Thanks,

NP

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicate Threads.

This is a Frequently Asked Question (by which I mean to suggest, please search before posting).
See GF16: Corrupt or empty world file, what do I do?.
