The man pages are a great resource. I think what could be done better is if theygave more examples and better explanations of what some of the options do. They are improving.

a little frustrating? hah.

and the man pages are ok, but like I said before, they focus too much on all the different feature/abilities of the wm. it can be overwhelming. they need to focus more on how to actually use and configure it. more examples would be great.

Isn't a great feeling when you are getting "closer"

this is the command I use for screenshots

sleep 3 && import -window root screenshot.png

Got it from either here in the forums or on the fvwm mailing list.

sleep just delays the action to give you time to do the next step.It will give you time to open some menus. I would assume that you could use whatever screenshot capture thing you want.

import is part of the imagemagick package.

Man pages are boring, but sometimes you learn things.

Also, i cant seem to get my font Dragonwick working on my menu, idesk see;s it fine which is odd..

Anywayz, im off to bed. Enough fvwm for the night.

You'd think a configuration app would've been made by now.

yep :)

It's just not really worth it when there are such great wm's out there such as kahakai.

The problem with a proper configuration app is that it would either have to be very complicated or limit what you could do. There are so many different things you can do, so many ways to combine all the different options. However, I think it would be a good idea to make a config app that is deliberately limited, so that new users can change stuff like menu and window decorations, edit the menu itself, and bind keys and mouse buttons, without having to worry about the various other settings right at the start.

Although the theme system is very powerfull in fvwm, i dont think it will ever be used to its potential unless they change some things to make it easier for newer people to add something as simple as a different window decoration. Take me for example,. i played with fvwm-themes but it does a lot of stuff i dont like and pretty much takes over your config file leaving you little room to change things. There is also fvwm-theme which is a single perl script which has the right idea, but it to has its problems. I ssimply copied the output from that in to my fvwm2rc file and managed to get window decorations working that way. Some of the methods almost seem caveman like, but like mentions above with the complexity of the system, such a app would be difficult at best.

If you do "emerge -pv fvwm" it will show you all the USE flags the ebuild will take notice of. It doesn't matter if you set them in make.conf or when you emerge fvwm, but setting them in make.conf will affect all emerges, while doing them on the command line will on affect fvwm.

I never use KDE, so I can't check, but I think you should just be able to run them normally.

Ah, sorry. In that case, you should do:
Code:
USE="foo bar" emerge fvwm

Are you talking about what USE flags for FVWM?

if you do:
Code:
emerge -pv fvwm
it will show you all the USE flags available for it. I believe the one listed in red(they also have a + sign in front of it) are the ones you have "activated" in your /etc/make.conf.

I think I used most of the flags for Fvwm except for Gnome cuz I dont want the 1.4 libs.

Hope makes sense

Yea, I can....but I need to tell you that my config is simply a modified version of this persons file: http://student.uci.agh.edu.pl/~artursc/

http://home.comcast.net/~luedchic/fvwm2rc_c
http://home.comcast.net/~luedchic/modules
http://home.comcast.net/~luedchic/decorations
http://home.comcast.net/~luedchic/menus

I used artursc's config as a starting point because his files were simple and I myself dont use a ton of Fvwm features.
I simply add things to my files as I try out new things. Today I may expand my desktop size and play with the FvwmPager.

in the fvwm2rc file you will notice a line that is:
Code:
Read "path/to/my/configs"
It is a little 'trick' I noticed other do to change their configuations easily.

I am still working on this and will be changing my configs later....

Hope it helps you tho.

There is a very nice and powerful FVWM theme, FVWM-Crystal.

Gallery is here: http://place.inside.net/fvwm-crystal/gallery.pl.html
Here you can download it: http://place.inside.net/fvwm-crystal/install.pl.html

At the moment page is only in polish, but installation is quite simple.
FVWM-Crystal has IRC channel, #fvwm-crystal on irc.freenode.net.

Some of those really look amazing, im currnetly running the latest, so could I edit the ebuild to not depend on cvs? fvwm-cvs-20030828.tar.gz isnt even the latest version :) They released 2.5.8 recently.

Do you think you could post the fvwm2rc for
http://place.inside.net/fvwm-crystal/images/screenshot/aiken_2003-09-11.jpg
and
http://place.inside.net/fvwm-crystal/images/screenshot/lucass_2003-08-25.jpg

Im interested in how you were able to modify the taskbar, and pager so nicely.

Could somebody PLEASE tell me how this this true transparency is possible without XDirectFB?

It would be amazingly sweet if it could be implemented into other window managers.

Corwin... Is your name from some book? I could swear your name sounds familiar. I remember... He grew back eyes, or something? And something about a place called Chaos?

Nothing like breaking your config into 1000 files :)
that is a nice idea, but a tad confusing..
