I've also spent a lot of time perfecting the fvwm ebuilds, the fvwm-2.5.7-r2 ebuild in portage allows all compile time features to be toggled with USE flags, and will install the FvwmTabs module if you have tcltk and perl set in your USE flags.

But I can only find fvwm-2.4.16-r1.
Where can I find the new version, 2.5.7-r2?
The 2.5.* versions give Full Internationalization Features, I am a user from Asia, hehe.

I have run the `emerge sync' command and fresh my portage tree.
I'm using Gentoo 1.4.

BTW, after I run `emerge -u system', the system give me the following msg:
Code:

* GNU info directory index is up-to-date.
* IMPORTANT: 4 config files in /etc need updating.
* Type emerge --help config to learn how to update config files.

Followed the help, I find the 4 files under my /etc folder, ._cfg0000_make.conf, ._cfg0000_make.globals, initd./._cfg0000_hdparm, ._cfg0000_dispatch-conf.conf.
But how to deel with the 4 files?
What can I do?
I am a newbie, thank you for your help!

you should do something like
Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge fvwm

Fvwm 2.5 is the unstable branch of fvwm, and for that reason isn't tagged as stable yet... i guess.

For the files in /etc... as root, just type:
Quote:
etc-update

And then you can see the differences between the configuration files, and you can replace the old file, with the new one, or merge the old one and the new one... just try and you'll see.

Another reason to like it:
You can configure your intellimouse w/ 5 buttons, so you can use your extra 4th and 5th buttons to move and resize windows. so you never have to move a window by its titlebar again. (careful its addicting)
:-)[/url]

I configured the extra buttons on an optical mouse right in the xf86config file. Now those extra features work in every app. They are button 6=doubleclick button 7= altF4 for close.

I've been getting a few requests recently for example configurations, so in the interests of converting more users to fvwm :P , I've stripped down my configuration, added lots of comments and i've put it on the web here.

http://dev.gentoo.org/~taviso/fvwm2rc.html

This is a screenshot of my latest configuration (simple, clean, should be easy to follow)

[img:4a0086cb41]http://dev.gentoo.org/~taviso/thumbnail.png[/img:4a0086cb41]

If anybody else has an interesting configuration, or has an example of a cool feature i havnt used, feel free to post it! :)

As a side note, fvwm-2.5.7-r3 is stable on x86, sparc and alpha..woo!

Code:
taviso@insomniac:~$ emerge -pv fvwm
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild   R   ] x11-wm/fvwm-2.5.7-r3  +readline +truetype +ncurses +gtk +stroke -gnome -rplay -xinerama -cjk +perl -nls +png -bidi +imlib +tcltk +debug +gtk2

im fairly interested in fvwm, but even with your config, its still pretty bland. Im currently using flux,(recent switch from gnome as i was using gnome forever) and right now im pretty happy, but i see some of the neat tings that are possible with fvwm.

A Few things that i personally think would get fvwm a little more attention, well like others have said, a nicer default theme. Ability to have a theme system like others (might be there, couldnt find anything like this).

Maybe post some more stuff for us to try and you might make a few more zealots around here :)

I was a longtime fluxbox user, but then I saw this thread...I guess I'm a fvwm zealot now :) fluxbox is nice, but very limited in what you can configure. It may be easier to get it looking good, but I don't care about that so much. Anyway, this is my current config (screenshot) Note: I haven't been using fvwm long, so I'm pretty sure there are some mistakes in there. If you try to use it, you'll also need the "fvwm-theme" script from here, it helps setting window decorations when you're not as l33t as taviso :D
Some little things I have: popup menus to list Simpsons/Futurama/Family Guy videos - I just open the menu and click a file to play it with mplayer; move and resize windows with the side mouse buttons; desktop mousewheel switching, like fluxbox; transparent menus.
The only thing I miss from fluxbox is being able to drag windows between desktops. I think you can do it when your desktop is split into pages, but I don't like doing that.

Are those desktop icons an fvwm feature? Or do you use some external program?

u can write a FVWM function that does MoveToDesktop and GotoDesktop that executes when u drag a window to the edge, i don remember how, but i had it in a keybind (not using fvwm anymore, x11-wm/ion-devel lets me get work done =) )

Yeah, I figured there would be a way to do it, but I haven't worked out how yet :)

I agree, a default theme that showed off some of the cool things you could do would probably go down well, but they do say you should use plain and neutral decoration when your selling a house, maybe its the same with window managers? :)

There is a theme system in portage, x11-themes/fvwm-themes, which is surprisingly advanced and easy to use, it contains pre-written configuration components that you can mix and match, you dont have to edit any configuration files (unless you want to) as all settings are controlled from the menus.

Nice desktop! Im not exactly l33t, just like simple titlebars so not too hard to make them :)
I might copy some of your windows-key bindings, mine is currently sitting there doing nothing.
Code:
#Win-W changes wallpaper
Key WA4Exec ~/scripts/wp.pl

Interesting! a script that picks a random wallpaper? might have to give that a shot.

its an external program, x11-misc/idesk, it lets you draw translucent svg icons on your root window which looks pretty sweet. works great with fvwm.

It's just a crappy little thing I did months ago. If anyone wants it:
Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl
$dir="/mnt/wing/My\ Documents/Stuff/wp";

opendir WP,$dir;
@wps=sort(readdir(WP));
closedir WP;

$total = scalar @wps;
$num=int(rand($total))+1;
`wmsetbg -s '$dir/$wps[$num]'`

Plain and neutral maybe. I think fvwm's default seems more like a house with just the framing. This thread is the only reason I'm giving fvwm a second look.

fvwm-2.5.8 was released last night, and theres a masked ebuild in portage for those who want to give it a shot, I've also applied a patch posted to the fvwm mailing list that enables Fast translucent menus, that can handle menu animation and PopUp Overlapping, it looks really sweet.

This is what I'm playing with at the moment:
Code:
Colorset 7 fg white, hi white, DGradient 128 1 #f6f6f6 50 #101010, Translucent black 50

MenuStyle * FVWM, PopupOffset -6 100, Animation Off
MenuStyle * Font "xft:snap", MenuColorset 7, HilightBack grey
MenuStyle * Greyed black, Hilight3DOff, BorderWidth 1, TitleUnderlines1,
MenuStyle * SeparatorsLong, TrianglesSolid, Animation
MenuStyle * ItemFormat "%.4s%.1|%.5i%.5l%.5l%.5r%.5i%.20p%2.3>%1|"
#MenuStyle * AutomaticHotkeys

Anyone come up with something nicer? :)

Apparently this will perform better with BackingStore enabled, if you `startx` you can change your serverargs to include +bs in /usr/X11R6/bin/startx, if you use xdm, you can set it in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers. This is what I'm using:

Code:
serverargs="+bs -tst -bestRefresh"

Im really interested in trying this out as it looks to be what i want, however im running into some difficulty. A.) fvwm-themes program doesnt work properly, when i do fvwm-themes-config --show-themes it seems to work fine, however if i do fvwm-themes-config --theme e17 it returns an error ' try --help for more info.. blah blah'. I also dont see how you guys make it look 'good' as ive only gotten the menu to look ok. Also, how do i change window decorations? Ive downloaded some, they say to put them in $FVWM_SHARE/DECOR but i dont have a /usr/share/fvwm/decor, instead i have a decorations. Is it possible to extract to ~/.fvwm/?something?

Thanks in advance.

I only tried that program once, but it gives me the same message when I run it now. Must be broken or something :(

Where did you download them from? The ones I'm using are from here, and they seem to work without too much trouble. You just download a script + the tarball for the theme you want, edit a couple of settings in the script to suit your system, and add a line to your .fvwm2rc file.

Thats where i downloaded them from...
I even tried that fvwm-themes script, but it just seems to output that to the screen, so i did what i said and added fvwm-themes -init to the .xinitrc and it didnt seem to make any diffrence. Now im simply looking to fix my window decorations, and find a easy way to play with themes and ill be content.

OK, try this:
  • remove the fvwm-theme command from .xinitrc
  • If you haven't already, edit the "fvwm-theme" script and change the "Configurable constants" section to whatever you want.
  • extract the decorations tarball into the directory $SHARE_DIR/decors (I have $SHARE_DIR=~/.fvwm/fvwm-theme)
  • run "fvwm-theme -decor <name of decor>"
  • edit your ~/.fvwm/.fvwm2rc file, and put this near the top somewhere:
    Code:
    #   Sets up window decorations
    PipeRead 'fvwm-theme -init'

  • restart fvwm

I think that should work :)

alright, I give up, this is to damn agrevating, and i cant make it work. All it does it put background= into .fvwm-theme

I want to like it but i must say its 20x more difficult to do anything compared to other wm's. If you can possibly maybe attach your .fvwm/ dir and i can maybe play from there.

thanks

ok, i have this
/home/fizz/.fvwm/fvwm-theme/decors
i have two subfolders (untared files from that site)

my settings in fvwm-theme
my $SHARE_DIR = '~/.fvwm/fvwm-theme';
my $USER_FILE = "$ENV{HOME}/.fvwm-theme

i run the following command
./fvwm-theme -decor elberg
(elberg being a directory in the above decors folder)

Nothing is output to screen, and ~/.fvwm-theme is blank.

Any clue?
