depclean is actually quite efficient - when used properly.

It's vital to always read the warnings and messages that are generated by emerge.

In this case emerge --depclean would have suggested using the -pv options to check to make sure that nothing critical would be unmerged, and how to address that.

Always run depclean with -pv or -av
Code:
emerge --depclean -av

If you are in doubt about anything, it's always better to ask here before risking anything. :)

It probably just wants to unmerge an old version of gcc. Do you see "selected" and "protected" versions listed? The "selected" on is the one that will be unmerged; the "protected" one will not.

Then make sure your system is up to date:
  • emerge --sync
  • emerge -uDNv world
  • revrep-rebuild
and then try again. "emerge --depclean" should really never be used on anything other than a completely up-to-date system.

I generally feel safer with "emerge -p --depclean &>depclean.lst", review the packages in the list, then specifically "emerge -C" what I want to remove. Lather, rinse, repeat. This would work better if I remembered the syntax to inject packages that I don't want removed. I've seen the syntax, but never at the right time.
