I have 4 computers running Gentoo. This week there was an update to Chromium (www-client/chromium-53.0.2785.89::gentoo, replacing 52.0.2743.116::gentoo).

It compiles fine on 2 computers so far. A 3rd not tried yet.

The problem on the 4th computer is it crashes while compiling and shuts the computer completely off. Nothing about the compile failure is in the log files. I can find no reason why the computer crashes and shuts off. Everything else I tried compiles without a problem, just Chromium causes the problem so far.

I don't know what to do to troubleshoot this problem.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hardware problem? I would start with a memtest

I know some systems will turn themselves off when it starts to overheat (compiling large packages can cause a lot of heat), so you may want to look into that.

Tried memtest, RAM checks good.

SMART data for the 2 hard divers has no errors.

I think ct85711 gave me the clue I needed.

I monitored the temp while running the compile again with no other programs running on the computer and over heating seems to be the problem. When idling the CPU temp is 37°-40° C, the max temp from the specs is 73° C, the temps I saw were as high as 78° C. With other programs running, it probably went higher. I checked it a couple of hours later and the temp was 70°-71° C. It finished the compile this time but I need to make some changes.

The heat sink compound loses thermal conductivity over time. I could try replacing the heat sink compound but I think a better cooler will extend the life of the CPU. It has been in use for 4 years running 24/7, the heat sink compound is probably shot.

I had a problem with this system shutting down intermittently a few months ago (which I had forgotten about) and cleaning the dust out of the heat sink fixed it.

Update:

I replaced the heat sink compound this weekend and compiled Chromium.

The CPU temp is running 10° C cooler with max load.

I also ordered a new CPU cooler with 2 copper heat pipes. It should lower them temp more, maybe another 10° C.
