PostPosted: Mon Nov 09, 2009 12:14 pm    Post subject: Kernel Panic eth0 onboard Reply with quote

Hello,
I installed gentoo-hardened as per notes etc. All was going ok, but I got Kernel panic at the boot:
(sorry i can't provide more logs ...)
Kernel panic: not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt

I'm pretty sure its eth0 drivers though? When I went through interactive mode on startup. I'm pretty sure i'm not loading correct drivers :(
Stats from the Live CD (where loading CONFIG_FORCEDETH drivers for eth0 work fine...)

I have tried adding into network devices the forcedeth drivers but no use :(
Pls advise

thank you

Here is a good place to start trying to fix your kernel:

follow the guide here:
http://62.3.120.141/~pappy/

paste lspci -n here:
http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/

good luck!

drivers to recognize filesystems and hard drives need to be built into kernel, not as modules.
such as sata_nv

and yes pappys kernel seeds will help you.

assuming your guessing right with your ethernet driver.

1/ lspci -v : this will gives you the module used for your network card
2/ add that module name to /etc/module.d/blacklist

Now your gentoo will boot, try to trigger net.eth0 but without module card won't be seen and fail.

If you get the prompt, chances your ethernet driver was doing the crash are high now.
modprobe ethernetdriver
/etc/init.d/net.eth0 restart

if it crash, you were right. (saddly if it doesn't crash, that won't gives you proof it's not the driver, just a clue)

No. Only the driver that need the disk used to let gentoo boot. It's perfect legit for example a SATA driver inside kernel + a PATA as module. It's also legit to use SCSI inside kernel and SATA+PATA as module... So PATA inside + SATA module is right as long as your root isn't in a sata drive.
Same for filesystem: using EXT3 inside kernel and EXT4 as module.

And i think he is showing the modules loaded from livecd as his kernel fail to boot. That should explain tons of modules loaded

Hi,
sorry, yes, I have shown all the modules from liveCD. It must , somehow work, as from liveCD the eth0 is fine . . .
i've build the kernel without any modules (i think it's safer for a server system that way)

see if i can manage today, going away for a while :/

thanks :)

I'm also experiencing this issue. Any Root Cause found?

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-801736-highlight-kernel+panic+syncing+fatal+exception+interrupt.html

There's another thread...

I thought it was a VIA / Realtek driver issue, but I replaced both cards with Intel's and same problem.

you just linked us back to this same thread :)

at any rate, which kernel sources did you choose? hardened-sources or which?

I've seen SELinux cause this symptom, if you chose a kernel sources set that has SELinux rubbish in it, try adding selinux=0 in grub.conf and see if that doesn't sort it.

Hi,
sorted. Used newer forcedeth drivers than in the gentoo-hardened.Had a chat with 'pappy'
thanks.
