Pappy,

I really like those jason wallpapers. They're pretty much the kind of thing that I was wishing for. :)

He does excellent work. I had one of his graphics up as wallpaper for the late gen-tosh. I'm glad he took time out of his schedule to set me up, and keep me going.

Blessed be!

Pappy:

I like the background too, but its almost 1/2 a MB! :o

I fetched it and re-saved it as a jpg; its now down to just over 70 KB, less than 1/8th its original size. 8)

It looks just as good to me. Download it from http://www.elilabs.com/~rj/ns-t3b-big.jpg and see for yourself. It should sure speed up the download times, and cut your costs too, if you pay by the byte like I do. :D

I have it in .jpg already. I wanted it as a .png so that nothing was lost. And while your image does look good, to me it doesn't have the sparkle of the .png. I will trim things down a bit. But I'm taking a couple days off projects. I was starting to feel a little rushed and crushed.

Blessed be!

Follow these easy steps to feeling better:

1. Eat turkey.

2. Give thanks.

3. Relax.

Happy Thanksgiving! :D

I've uploaded .configs for 2.6.31-zen9 in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. It's not listed on the main page for the site since that pages is currently being checked for re-release. Enjoy!

Blessed be!

I've edited the settings pages, and corrected some incorrect info. I have also changed the main graphic to .jpg so it loads faster. Page four is currently being checked for accuracy, and will be put up as soon as it passes muster. Page five is on the way, as are the rest of the settings pages.

There's nothing like a four-day weekend to clear the cranial cobwebs.

Blessed be!

That's a really good question. I still have settings pages to finish, as well as a links page. I also have a few more custom graphics on the way for the actual pages with files. Once that's done, I think I'll set up a page of my other contributions to Linux; the stuff that I have done but haven't made public as of yet. Yes, I do have a few secrets here in my mad scientist laboratory.

Of course, once the pages are done, I'll be back here making my presence known; once again helping those with flaky .configs.

Blessed be!

am tempted to try out zen-sources for the laptop.

am unclear though - running compat-wireless currently under standard gentoo sources; if i go stable zen-sources will i still be able to do this, or is it already included, or which?

just thumbed through their FAQ's and am still unsure.

as well noticed the drm-next use flag, can't find doc on it for anything

don't want to clutter this up too much with something that's more specific to the zen-sources thread - trying to evaluate if it's worth trying out or not.

EDIT: I ask because I saw a comment in an old thread speaking highly of them (@pappy)

EDITED EDIT: ah right, here we are; http://www.kernel-seeds.org/seeds/64_bit/zen/01-zen-notes.txt

Since zen kernels are somewhat experimental, it stands to reason that there are duds that get dropped every now and again. That said, the latest zen sources with BFS are very good indeed. I personally recommend 2.6.30-zen10, as it is very stable, and not afflicted with certain problems that effect the entire .31 family.

Then again, since .32 has finally arrived on the scene, that recommendation could change. I'll have to see what comes down the line from the Zen folks.

Blessed be!

rather than wait, i decided to be an adventurer

put together this one and it screams.

I could never put my finger on *what* exactly, but it just *feels* more snappy; no clue why

I have added the fourth settings page. The .32 kernels have been released, and I will get them all up this evening, once everything settles. The main web server is down for some serious maintenance. However, I've switched to a different machine here, so you shouldn't notice a difference in how things work, except perhaps a slight speed increase.

Blessed be!

BFS is really awesome! It makes machines scream. I'm totally hooked. It even makes the P-III web server run faster than it has ever run.

Blessed be!

Pardon my ignorance of the latest things in kernel-land, but what is BFS?

I presently have 2 machines that have been languishing with partially completed installs, and they have sat there so long I probably need to just start over on them.

One is an HP nw8420 laptop with 2 GHz Centrino, 2 GB ram, and 250 GB disk, 1920x1200 screen, wifi, bluetooth, and Pantech broadband adapter in PCMCIA slot, although it looks like a pair of USB serial devices when it is connected, and uses PPP.

The other is an AMD quad-core with 8 GB ram and 5 SATA hot-swap slots with 5 1.5 GB 7500 RPM drives. This box uses a simple text boot console thru a KVM switch, and then everything else is over vnc, as it functions as a server, not a workstation.

I also have a Lenovo W500 laptop that is currently running XP with vmware, and Gentoo (among other OS's) running under vmware. This box has an Intel core-2 duo cpu running at 2.56 GHz, 4 GB ram (soon to be 8 GB ram), a 256 GB OCZ Solid State Drive, a 1920x1200 display, bluetooth, wifi, and the same Pantech broadband adapter (it gets moved back and forth). As soon as I finish my current project, I plan to install Gentoo on this box and run XP and probably Windows-7 under vmware. My only concern is that I can still run Visual Studio under XP as a guest under vmware running under Gentoo as the host and still be able to connect to another vmware virtual machine for debugging. I think this ought to work, but with Microsoft, one never knows until you test it.

So, Pappy, starting with the AMD quad-core box, what kernel should I try to install? You probably remember this as the box with the flakey ethernet that works OK with the liveCD but flakey under 2.6.29-gentoo-r5.

BFS is affectionately known as the Brain Fuck Scheduler and is offered in the zen kernels as an alternative in place of deadline, CFQ or BFQ IO schedulers.

It makes my machines scream. It's on the first page of all zen kernels with BFS (.30-zen4, and .31-zen1 (if I read my gits correctly)). I will add zen-tune documentation, but I think I'll leave that to an appendix, with stuff on hardened-sources, gentoo-sources, and probably even tuxonice, assuming I can find someone who sets it up so it works. I've never tried, and at the moment, I have a few more important things to do than figure out tuxonice.

Blessed be!
