I am getting the same error each time I try to install.

Code:
VFS: Cannot open root device "<NULL>" or unknown-block (8.8)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option

fstab
Code:
/dev/sda8      /      ext3      noatime      1 2
/dev/sda9      /home      ext3      defaults   0 0
/dev/SWAP      none      swap      sw      0 0
/dev/cdrom      /mnt/cdrom   auto      noauto,ro   0 0

Boot info from menu.lst on distro I boot everything from

Code:
title Gentoo (sda8)
root (hd0,7)
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.30-gentoo-r5 real_root=/dev/sda8

What am I doing wrong?

You have real_root instead of root.

Did you build your kernel with genkernel or with the manual method? Your grub.conf is mixing the two methods so I can't tell what's missing.

also the /dev/SWAP none swap sw 0 0 line in your fstab needs to be corrected to point to a real device.

I have corrected the swap and changed from real_root to root - same error.

Yes it should be -r8 but does the name make a difference? I feel myself that it is something to do with this that I am getting wrong.

It is not genkernel and I went through the kernel compile process using Pappy's seeds.

It basically can't be the same error message unless you haven't changed what you think you've changed. Please post the new error message or confirm your changes to menu.lst.

your kernel does not have hard drive controller driver built in
boot cd or another current linux and run
Code:
 lspci -k
and post results

boot livecd or some other installed linux of the same bitness as your gentoo install:
enter the chroot:
Code:
mkdir /mnt/gentoo  #if not present already
mount /dev/sda8 /mnt/gentoo
mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc
mount -o bind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
env-update
source /etc/profile
export PS1="(chroot) $PS1"

Edit kernel configuration:
Code:
cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig

NVIDIA SATA support

You were right of course.

Listen, I am very grateful for all the effort you have put in to correct my ignorance/stupidity.

Thanks a lot!
