Dear Gentoo users,

I am setting up a new linux on my machine. When I finished installing Windows and now Ubuntu (frogive me, I have to look left and right, too, in the linux world *g*), the installer (from Ubuntu) couldn't set up GRUB in the MBR.
Now I use the LiveDVD 10.1 to do it by hand:

I type in the bash:
Code:
grub

all is ok.

I declare my /boot partition, which is /dev/sda1 on my inspiron 6000 / I guess it uses SATA.
Code:
root (hd0,0)

"filesystem type unknow, partition type 0x7"
Ok...

I want to install grub now.
Code:
setup (hd0)

"Cannot mount selected partition".

Code:
find /boot/grub/stage1

he doesn't find it...

Damn / this never happened to me. Could it be due to the ext3 filetype I used for my /boot partition?
QUESTION 1: HOW DO I SETUP GRUB?

And Hell - during the last years I have never been able to set up a partition table with linux which CAN BE READ BY WINDOWS boot discs..
This is pretty shitty, as I had to partition my drive with the Win XP installation disk now..

I used fdisk, cfdisk and gparted (in KDE). I always used "setup ms dos partition table", but I have used 2 windows cds up to now, neither of which was able to boot..
QUESTION 2: HOW DO YOU PARTITION YOUR DRIVES THEN??
in my first linux years in 2006 it always worked out well using my partition tables set up under cfdisk... even though its the same (original) windows CD I use..

There is a joke about it:
"Tell a computer 2 times the same thing and it will do 2 different things each time.."
Haha. It that case it SEEMS to be true.

Greetings,
thanks for your time,

Boris

PS:
This is my ptable, by the way..
