I am not sure if this should be here or desktop environment . Mods move if necessary.Ok I have searched and tried all tricks I can find, including the ati radeon sticky, different kernels, but I have no X . I get "no screens found" . I hope it is something stupid I am missing. I dont know how to post log files as I have only bash prompt.
Some system info:
Epox 8rda
XP2500
512 mb pc3200
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro ( Sapphire)
IBM/Hitachi 40GB(2) hda1-ntfs/winxp, hda2 /boot, hda3 swap, hda5 /.

Before I purchased this card as an upgrade to my original radeon. I thought about going nvidia but felt the video quality was worth it. I knew of the problems with 3d and the ati-driver workaround. But I can't get nothing. I tried different kernels because I noticed an agp problem. I currently have 2.4.22-rc2-ac3 and according to lspci | grep I have agp. The card doesn't appear to be recognized properly. I bet I could drop my old card in and be up and running so what gives? I also moved to 1.4 final when I switched cards. Any connection?

Anyone have any thoughts?
Help would be appreciated I have been fighting this for two weeks off and on.
Shawn

lspci just shows you the devices you have in your system. lsmod will show you if you have the agpgart module loaded.

It's a lot easier to help with problems like this if you can post your config & logfile. If you have some webspace, emerge ncftp or something similar and upload them that way. I was going to suggest copying them to your XP partition and posting from Windows, but I see it's NTFS, so that's out :( Try setting the driver to "vesa" in your XF86Config. It should work well enough for you to post the files.

Thanks for the quick reply wedge_
I do have a storage drive that is hdb1- vfat, forgot to list that. I will mount that drive and transfer my log files. Now as I have not done it before, where do I find them ? I know where XF86Config is , what else would be helpful? I think this time around I compiled agpgart and nvidia support into the kernel.

I started off with gaming sources and my agp bridge wasn't recognised. Now in dmesg I can see agpgart loading for nforce2.

Thanks for your help I am losing patience with my new supposedly better video card.
Shawn

I'll try the vesa driver and see if I can copy some logfiles.

Tried vesa driver. X server starts now but screen is distorted and mouse and keyboard are unresponsive. Noticed mousedev not loading module when hotplug loads. Off to try more stuff. I'll keep checking back.

Your config file is /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, and the logfile for X is /var/log/XFree86.0.log. However, every time X is started, it copies the existing file to /var/log/XFree86.0.log.old, and overwrites the old one with the information for the new instance. If you're using X with the vesa driver, then you should make sure you're posting a logfile from one of the times you tried to start using the fglrx driver. If you do
Code:
cat <logfile> | grep fglrx
and get lots of lines back, you should have the right one.

ok I will cp those to post. I tried and got X up with vesa, after knocking my res to 800x600 @ 16 bit
Crude looking but it's a start.

Currently I am running only xfree 4.3.0-r2 drivers.
I tried ati-drivers and fglrx config per the radeon sticky previously and thought I would try something else.
Maybe I will try ati-drivers again and shoot for a lower resolution to start.
What version do you like? 2.9.12 or the newer 3.0 branch

Have you seen the Radeon HOWTO thread? It has some good information to offer. The 2.9.x drivers are currently faster than the 3.2.x drivers, but the 3.2.x drivers are a bit more stable, and fix some problems that the 2.9.x drivers had. The 3.2.x drivers also have FSAA support, but the performance hit from enabling it is pretty high.

yep seen that one. Only driver I've tried so far is 2.9.12 ? the default from portage. Maybe I'll try a newer one.

heres a snip of what comes up if I use the radeon driver in xfree 4.3.0-r2

(WW)RADEON: No matching device section for instance (BusID PCI:2:0:1) found
(EE)No devices detected

fatal server error:
No screens found

I am off to try ati-drivers again per the link, maybe i did something wrong

All the drivers > 2.9.12 are marked ~x86, so you'll need to use ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" to emerge them.

It's hard to tell what's actually wrong without seeing the whole log. If the fglrx driver doesn't work, post the log from that attempt along with your current config.

Ok I think its not loading agpgart properly. I compiled it in because on a previous attempt it would give me unresolved symbols when I modprobe agpgart. So I recompiled again and this time it took! modprobe agpgart ok, load modules in modules.autoload. Startx and the server tried to come up and froze. Nothing would respond had to hard reboot. Now I get kernel panic, my / is hosed. So here I start over for the 4th time in two weeks ( don't ask) well I have learned a little more through this and I should hopefully have it up soon. Wish me luck.

Just a quick thought, have you made sure you selected NVIDIA's agpgart driver in your kernel? it should be there in 2.4.22 kernels, with the 2.4.20 kernels you need to patch them with the file availiable in NVIDIA's linux nforce driver.

sc00by, in your XF86Config file, there's a setting called "UseInternalAGPGART", which controls whether you use the AGP support that the driver has, or the AGP support in the kernel. Try setting it to "no", and see if that works.

Well I think we are getting closer. Compiled agpgart as module. lsmod shows agpgart and fglrx loading. set internal agpgart to no. X tries to load screen goes black, keyboard unresponsive. This time I was able to get back in and post these:

When the screen goes black, can you get back to a console with CTRL-ALT-F1 etc? I don't see anything much wrong with your log anymore.

no ctrl+alt+backspace , or ctrl+ alt+f1, nothing brings it out but a hard reboot, which I hate doing. I am guessing it could be screen resolution settings. When my monitor switch resolution it clicks and it clicks twice and flashes before going black. I will try a lower res and see what happens, Thanks for the help, and suggestions

It's probably not a resolution or monitor problem unless you can get back to the console with CTRL-ALT-F1 and friends. Try setting IgnoreEDID to "on", just in case it is. If that doesn't help, then next time it hangs, reboot and copy the contents of /var/log/XFree86.0.log somewhere before you start X again, and post the old log so we can see where it's hanging.

Well I am about to get rid of either the vid card or the motherboard this is ridiculous! I tried changing internal agpgart to yes and that didnt work external doesnt work. lsmod shows agpgart and fglrx loaded. At least it is crashing to the desktop again and not having to hard reboot. I am at my wits end , are you there yet wedge_ ? I really do appreciate the time you are devoting to this.

Figures after I rant and try againg it works.
I have no mouse or keyboard resonse but the ugly icewm comes up. It took what seems like a minute to come up. Maybe it was slow and I was impatient. Well off to fix my mouse and keyboard

Switching from agpgart compiled to module and loading modules at boot got the errors to stop. I think what finally fixed it was me giving it a chance to work. I was so frustrated that at the point I sent my last configs and you commented it looked ok, I wasn't giving the monitor, etc long enough to switch. I had forgotten how long X takes to load. I was about to give up and walked away from the computer and when I came back it was up. Oh, I also had framebuffer enabled in the kernel and took that out and recompiled and next time I rebooted it took a few seconds and switched on. I had been fighting myself mostly it would appear through this, at least now I am well practiced at kernel and xfree config :) if not slightly red faced.
Thank you all
Shawn

now if I could get alsa to compile without errors........... topic for another section
