source command not found [/SOLVED]

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

source command not found [/SOLVED]

I have recently upgraded my gentoo profile and I am in the process of upgrading gcc to 4.3.4. However, after upgrading the profile I tried running

Code: Select all

#sudo env-update && sudo source /etc/profile
To my dismay the message "command not found" was returned. I have never had this problem before. I still have the man page for source, but when I type

Code: Select all

whereis source
the command is not located. Also,

Code: Select all

#find -name source
does not find the command. How can I recover from this. Is it safe for me to push a head with upgrading gcc followed by

Code: Select all

#sudo emerge -eav system && sudo emerge -eav world
. I still have not rebooted my system from upgrading to the latest profile. I have done a emerge -autDN world though. I have also already ran

Code: Select all

gcc-config x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-4.3.4
. Is it safe to reboot? Is there a package that I need to install to get back the source command?

Sincerely,

dustfinger.

-- EDIT --
I should note that running the command

Code: Select all

#sudo env-update
completes with no errors. It is specifically the source command that is missing.

source isn't a command. You don't need to sudo it either. It only affects the current shell and you can get the same effect by logging out and logging back in again.

Thank you widremann,

I was just concerned that perhaps the fact that the source script, or program, could not be found might be a sign that something went wrong following the upgrade of the profile. I have since logged out, and logged back in, and am continuing with upgrading gcc and rebuilding system and world. Perhaps that will put things straight.

Thank you for your advice.

Sincerely,

dustfinger.

"source" is a builtin command of the shell, so sudo (or su or any other command wrapper) will never be able to find it.

Thank you for the explanation Genone,

I think that I am going to pick up a GNU-Linux administration book. I have been using Gentoo-Linux for years now and after all of this time I still don't know some of the most basic things. In fact, it would be ideal if there was a specific book for Gentoo administration. Most of these books seem to be bias to Redhat Linux. I realize that most of the information still applies. Anyway, I am just thinking as I type. I will do some searching around.

Sincerely,

dustfinger.
