I have installed Gentoo 2.6.30-r8 from scratch following the Gentoo Handbook. Now I want to install KDE 4.2, but in order to do that I have to upgrade portage-2.1.6 to portage-2.2_rc46. I tried to unmask portage-2.2_rc46, but there was no /etc/portage directory. So, I made it myself and created package.unmask. But emerge still wants to emerge portage-2.1.6. I don't know why, but I used the locate command to locate the package.unmask file. It didn't find it, although 'ls /etc/portage' says it does exist. How can I fix this? |

Updatedb solved the locate problem. But I'm still puzzled about why there was no /etc/portage directory. And I still can't unmask portage-2.2_rc46. And apparently I need portage-2.2 to install kde 4.2 using sets. |

the user has had to create /etc/portage for at least a couple of years now. |

emerge -av =portage-2.2_rc46 results in: masked by: package.mask, ~x86 keyword). Problem fixed by editing both package.unmask and package.keywords. I thought I already tried that. Apparently I didn't! |

Why do you want KDE 4.2 if the stable release is higher?
Note: the KDE stable release in portage, at this moment, is 4.3.1 |
