My system crashed, and I have been unable to restart X properly.
I have killed gdm, killed xdm, rm -f /tmp/.X0-lock. startx fails because ther is a server already running. Whatever it is survives a reboot.
My system has not been very stable lately after my cpu died & now limping with an old P100 cpu untill I can scrape some $ together for a new system.
Thanks, Brian
P.S. Searches on the forum did not shed any light on my problem, I know I must not have been searching for the right words.

Try removing /tmp/.X11-unix from the console without an X server running.

I tried that with no change, same error. I removed a few more files from my userid, as well as root, still no luck. I did an unclean shutdown after deleting any /tmp file associated with x, gdm starts as before but fails to login successfully. cntl-alt-F1 takes me out of gdm, logged in as root, killed gdm, tried startx, it started x but the desktop did not have the menubar, so cntl-alt-bkspc out, rebooted, gdm still fails to login.
I killed gdm again, re-logged into my user id from the console did startx, and it is now up.
If anyone knows what might be wrong with gdm, I would appreciate the help, I think I'll have to suffer with this slow beast for a few more month's. I can always skip gdm until I build my new system.
Thanks, Brian |
