before and after upgrading libxcb, I was attempting to fix broken libraries on my system.

Symptoms:

Eterm (and many many other things) offer up this warning: /usr/lib64/libuuid.so.1: no version information available (required by /usr/lib64/libSM.so.6)

Lots of ebuilds, especially older things on my system getting recompiled (for instance when running @preserved-rebuild) throw the following types of exceptions and die:
/usr/lib/libSM.so.6: undefined reference to `uuid_unparse_lower@UUID_1.0'

Every time I run revdep-rebuild (w/or/wo -i) it rebuilds libSM (x11-libs/libSM-1.1.1) and apr (dev-libs/apr-1.3.8) and finishes successfully but the problems persist.

I am also pursuing this on #gentoo on FreeNode.

I would also upgrade portage. The current 2.2 version is 2.2_rc46

Well, that libuuid problem is caused by the old libuuid
- it didn't have version info, the one from from util-linux does.
You need to remove the old one and make sure revdep-rebuild doesn't complain.

Sounds familiar. I remember solving this on my systems, but that was months ago..

Oooh, sounds like fun. :)

Is there anything in that output that you're uncertain about un-merging?

how do I do this? I have the latest available util-linux installed, but I was thinking perhaps it is the x86 emul that is causing the issues?

There is a great deal in the output of that I *know* I don't want to unmerge, and there are many slot versions of older things that I want to remove, but can't be certain will not cause issues. If I can be relatively certain that revdep-rebuild will pick them back up, then I don't really care. This, however, does not seem to be my issue.

BTW, qfile was not installed on one system that I was working on at work so it may not be on the OP's system. I found it at home..

Code:

jmd0 ~ # qfile qfile
app-portage/portage-utils (/usr/bin/qfile)

Sort of right - after all, preserved-libs was not created with libraries moving between packages
in mind, just major lib version bumps.

And libuuid was in e2fsprogs-libs, (sort of still is), but now on Gentoo
one from util-linux is used (in unstable, but coming soon to stable).

I think I may have found something...

Quote:

mythtv mgregory # qfile libuuid.so.1
sys-apps/util-linux (/lib64/libuuid.so.1)
app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-baselibs (/lib32/libuuid.so.1)

I tried the stuff that worked in that thread with no luck. Also, I cannot remove the emul stuff I posted before, I must have it for wine and nvidia-drivers among a few other less notables.

(and make uninstall didn't remove them, must do so manually)

Quote:
mythtv e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.3 # rm -fv /lib32/libuuid.so.1.2 /usr/lib32/libuuid.so
removed `/lib32/libuuid.so.1.2'
removed `/usr/lib32/libuuid.so'

waiting for revdep-rebuild to finish, then I will post the result.

Ok, revdep-rebuild caught and re-installed app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-baselibs-20080316 and didn't touch libSM and apr, which means that what I discovered with the old version of e2fsprogs and e2fsprogs-libs related to what revdep-rebuild was doing and the uuid issue with other packages *and* with @preserved-rebuild were almost all certainly related.

I'm running @preserved-rebuild now, but it has continued far longer than it had previously, which indicates to me that the problem is most likely solved.

if/when preserved-rebuild finishes, I will mark this as resolved thanks to what was posted by Mike.

ty! :o

That seems to have resolved this. I will update the first post. preserved-rebuild didn't finish, but it's a new error and I'll tackle it separately.

Thanks again guys, esp. mike. :!: :-)
