All solved, see this bug. The key is to use the latest ~arch gentoo-sources kernel 2.6.31-r2 and ~arch xf86-video-intel driver 2.9.0, with no xorg.conf at all. My thanks to all who helped.

Actually it is possible to use xorg.conf

I'm using mine with :

Code:
Section "ServerFlags"
   Option         "AutoAddDevices" "false"
EndSection

.. just to ignore hall policy files witch i have never bother to set up :oops:

I'm not using any ~arch kernel or any other ~package on my system and it is all up and running, i'm just not using kde or gnome i have a simple slim+fluxbox X system and the nv driver ....

Any chance that xorg abi mismatch detection find its way either in gentoo's update tools like module-rebuild or revdep-rebuild?

I just tried upgrading from X 1.5 to 1.6.5 and my keyboard and mouse are frozen when Gentoo starts gdm at boot.

This backdoor trick was useful so I didn’t have to chroot from a livecd:
blueflame wrote:
- Press Alt-SysRq-R after X comes up. This puts the keyboard in raw mode and you should be able to use Ctl-Alt-F1 to get to a console that way.

geonik250 suggested this command:
geonik250 wrote:

Code:
emerge -1 `qlist -IC x11-drivers`

Which did nothing.

Then I tried what Mike Hunt suggested:
Mike Hunt wrote:
Code:
emerge -1av $(qlist -IC x11-drivers)

This emerged the x11 drivers just fine. Here is where I get stuck:
Quote:
then re-link xdm and start X
Code:
rc-update add xdm default
/etc/init.d/xdm start

gdm is still loaded. What’s the command to kill gdm? And how do I set it so that Gentoo loads xdm at boot?

Joseph_sys’s notes are not very descriptive but it looks like there is a solution to the problem at hand. Here is what Joseph_sys has to say:
Joseph_sys wrote:
Here are my notes, try to follow them:
1.)
xorg.conf - should only have section:

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AllowEmptyInput" "FALSE"
EndSection

2.)
rc-update hal add default

3.)
kernel should have enable:
CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV=y

4.) make conf should have:
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev"
(instead of old: INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse")

USE="... hal dbus..."

With respect to 1.), should I add a ServerFlags section to my Xorg.conf or should a ServerFlags section replace a section in my xorg.conf like the ServerLayout section?

With respect to 2.), entering rc-update hal add default gave me this output:
Code:
 * rc-update: ‘/etc/init.d/hall’ not found; aborting
What command was Joseph_sys actually referring to?

With respect to 3.), what’s the grep command to determine if my kernel has CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV enabled?

I understand Joseph’s point 4.). That is, I changed “keyboard mouse” in my make.conf to “evdev”. And I already have hal and dbus set in USE= in my make.conf. Now that my make.conf is modified, I tried re-emerging the x11 drivers which didn't solve the problem.

My Xorg.conf looks like this:

iamben in #Gentoo on FreeNode said this:
Quote:

the service you need to start is hald,
Code:
/etc/init.d/hald start
. and hald needs to be started before X/gdm
To do that, iamben recommeds:
Code:
rc-update add hald default

And can a moderator please move this thread to Desktop Environments because it deals with X and has less to do with portage?

Code:
rc-update add hald default

gives me:
Code:
*hald already installed in runlevel 'default'; skippping

Are there any other commands I could try?

iamben suggested I try:
Code:
emerge xf86-input-evdev
/etc/init.d/xdm restart

That did the trick. Problem solved. =D
