|
|
It's about that time and since we have been compiling for almost 10 years, we have created a LiveDVD to show our accomplishments over the years. This LiveDVD not only includes the latest and greatest that the portage tree has to offer, it's also a Hybrid DVD which can be booted of any removable device. We have included a large set of packages, desktop environments and window managers in this 10.0 release.
I am posting this thread so YOU the user community can have a first look at this pre-release, which is schedule to be release before the 10th year anniversary. Enjoy it and report back any issues. Users are advised to test the images in virtualbox or similar before they actually burn it to an optical disc. The recommended way is to copy the iso data to a usb stick or hard drive. (see below)
Beta testers can help with:
- Report packages that don't work
- Test other WM/DE other than KDE (default)
- Test the gentoo64 optional kernel (defaults to 32bit gentoo)
- Report suggestions for new packages (If they comply with re-distribution, they could be added.. no promises)
Instructions on how to boot from usb stick
- Download iso located livedvd-x86-amd64-32ul-10.1
- Insert your usb or any removable device. It can even boot of a hard drive
- dd if=image.iso of=/dev/<DEVICE> # Do not point to a partition.

That's a great idea! Many thanks for taking it up!
... seems like a great fit that my Gentoo on USB-stick got data corruption -> the filesystem wants to be remade and filled with Gentoo 10
Best wishes,
Arne, excited to try the DVD _________________ Being unpolitical means being political without realizing it. - Arne Babenhauserheide ( http://draketo.de )

Hi,
I just downloaded the new livedvd image and burnt it to
a blank dvd ... I just put the dvd in my windows system and
rebooted. It booted up with no issues and I'm trying all the apps
and stuff on the image.
I only see one major issue with this release. You need to install
Adobe flash 10. If flash was added IMO .. that would added to the
overall feel of Gentoo ... _________________ General Blood ..

about flash redistribution...
I recently tested the kubuntu-livecd with kde3.5. Apparently they had a little (k)dialog which would download + install flash to the correct location. This could be an alternative to putting flash on the dvd. _________________ --

I downloaded and burnt livedvd-x86-x86_64-10.0.iso fine. However I have two problems.
First, when the livedvd boots, it does not recognize either my keyboard or mouse. I have a Logitech USB wireless keyboard/mouse. This forces me to manually shut down my PC. I tried rebooting using the slow usb option, but that too fails.
Lastly, when I tried to report a bug at https://bugs.gentoo.org/281827, Firefox 3.5.3 tells me: This Connection is Untrusted.
Thank you! |

Is it possible to publish catalyst specs that are used to create livedvd?
I just want to build ~amd64 for own use but haven't yet understood how to do that. |

|
|
Hello. I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop with a Core2 Duo 2060 processor. I tried to run the x86 x86_64 LiveDVD; everything was loading ok, it detected the intigrated intel video card and set the x11-xorg-gl renderer but when it got to loading kde it just hangs at a blank screen with a solid cursor in the top left corner. There is no error message, I'm unable to switch tty's or anything of that nature, the system is completely frozen so I can't get at the logs.
I know there is no hardware issues on the machine since I run XP on it all the time without any issues. Any thoughts? |

Is there a chance of also publishing a ppc version?
GNU/Linux distros for old Macs are quite hard to find, and Gentoo runs flawlessly on my old ppc iMac. _________________ Being unpolitical means being political without realizing it. - Arne Babenhauserheide ( http://draketo.de )

This may seem like a stupid question, but whats the root password? I want to manage my partitions but I can't do it without the root pass.
I tried 'root' because I thought I remember that working for other live cds, but it didn't work |

Oh, thanks. I also tried just 'su' but it asked me for my pass too so I didn't think sudo would work. Thanks very much! |

Hi,
I just tried the amd64 disk and it booted (if a bit slow). But when it came to "starting kdm", it stopped with a black screen with only a single grey underscore at the top left. It didn't react to any keyboard input except the kernel keys: "alt-F13-b" for reboot.
By typing I during startup to enter interactive mode and then skipping xdm, I could get to the commandline, but the backup command startx gave the same result.
I have an ATI X1300 card and I'm currently using the radeon driver. (damn, does that sound like "Hi, I'm ... and I test Gentoo LiveCD betas on old hardware?" )
Should I try the x86 version?
Best wishes,

I think it's weird to include non-free binary ONLY software like Adobe Flash Player in a source-based operating system. I've never felt the need to install it. How about Gnash? _________________ There is no system but GNU and Linux is one of its kernels.

Does gnash work?
I didn't feel the need to install anything which can show flash videos since I discovered youtube-dl _________________ Being unpolitical means being political without realizing it. - Arne Babenhauserheide ( http://draketo.de )

adobe flash and other non open source software cannot be distributed on the livedvd media for legal reasons.
ArneBab I will look into this today, I had others test with ATI and it worked but since we are using xorg-server-1.6 and no generated xorg.conf some may have issues like you, but xorg should work for most. |
