Not able to emerge

The other day I tried to emerge something and it locked up the machine (or something caused it) and i had to hard reboot the server.

i have done emerge --clean rsync several times and still can't seem to emerge ANYTHING just sits there until i hit ctrl-c


rainy root # emerge portsentry
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge net-analyzer/portsentry-1.1-r6 to /

there's where it just sits doing nothing

any help would be appreciated.
