Did I miss somthing? I finally have gentoo installed.I am running a PCI sound accelerator card called Crystal sound fusion that uses a 42xx driver on the live cd.Ok when it boots up to kde it says it cant find the directorys and switching to a null port. I did a /sbin/lsmod and got this
Module Size Used by Tainted: PF
ide-floppy 11908 0 (autoclean)
nvidia 1537984 10 (autoclean)
floppy 47004 0 (autoclean)
tulip 39168 1
ohci1394 15592 0 (unused)
ieee1394 29708 0 [ohci1394]
usb-storage 55608 0 (unused)
hid 12468 0 (unused)
uhci 23008 0 (unused)
usbcore 55456 1 [usb-storage hid uhci]

as you see no sound loaded but in kde info it reports the presence of my card.I know it will work as It did in redhat etc.I just have not configured it correctly. Please help this Gentoo newbie!!!!
Also installed emerged the arts xmms-arts plugin and xmms reports playing a stream of music but just no sound ,its driving me crazy!!

Thanks for anyhelp
:P

Do you know what module the card used under RedHat?

If so, just modprobe it. Otherwise, do something like :

root@host ~# for i in `ls -1 /lib/modules/2.4.21/kernel/drivers/sound/ | cut -f 1 --delimiter=.`
>do
>modprobe $i && echo "Success... $i"
>done

Ill try the commands you just gave thanks for reply here is also more info and a better update of the problem.

I just finished installing Gentoo 1.4 after 7 days lol I use the stage 3 pentium 4 gaming Kernel.r3
When I boot into kde it says it cant find the /snd/ folders and sending sound to null etc.I created the folders /dev/sound/mixer etc to rectify that problem.I Then did a /sbin/lsmod command and what you see below is what it says.ok now going below the diagram below =====>

module Size Used by Tainted: PF
ide-floppy 11908 0 (autoclean)
nvidia 1537984 10 (autoclean)
floppy 47004 0 (autoclean)

ohci1394 15592 0 (unused)
ieee1394 29708 0 [ohci1394]
usb-storage 55608 0 (unused)
hid 12468 0 (unused)
uhci 23008 0 (unused)
usbcore 55456 1 [usb-storage hid uhci]

Then I do cat /proc/pci and here is the list below

the only drivers showing up in there is ac97_codec.o & emu10k1
I know my card use's a crystal 42xx type driver.could this just be a driver issue? if so can I get it from portage? It loaded the driver from the livecd...SIGH I want my www.somafm.com "crys"

UPDATE
Looked in the kernel .config through kde control panel and see that sound support was not enabled by genkernel 1.6 for the pentium 4 in my kernel....................................................

what do I do? The system sees the card, the kernel wont talk to it,everything works great but no sound...................sorry its just making me mad
