PostPosted: Thu Sep 10, 2009 6:28 pm    Post subject: /var overflow when installing Open Office? Reply with quote

I am trying to install Open Office on a machine that I am building. I am getting repeated errors when building that appear to be from /var/tmp overflowing. My /var partition does seem to be getting full, and cleaning it out before starting the build doesn't seem to help (enough)

I would appreciate any suggestions as to how best to fix this... I'm guessing I may need to move some of my directories, but I'm not sure which ones, and where it would be safe to move them to...

The error dump from the last attempt -

The relevant disk stats - and yes, the /var partition is pretty much full up. The prior failures have been similar, though I'm not sure if they were occurring at the exact same point in the build. Per some comments in other posts that I found, I'd tried deleting /var/tmp/portage, and just before starting this run, I'd tried deleting ALL of /var/tmp (which got the partition down to about 20% full)
Code:

grey ~ # du -xsH /var /var/tmp
4223660 /var
3767912 /var/tmp
grey ~ # df

The relevant (I think) parts of my /etc/make.conf:
Code:

PORTAGE_TMPDIR=/var/tmp
PORTDIR=/usr/portage
DISTDIR=/usr/portage/distfiles
PKGDIR=/usr/portage/packages
PORT_LOGDIR=""

#ccache size is limited to the default 2G

# DISTCC_DIR sets the temporary space used by distcc.
#DISTCC_DIR="${PORTAGE_TMPDIR}/.distcc"
# distcc is not used

My output of emerge-info
Code:

grey ~ # emerge --info

5GB is FAR too less for OpenOffice!

I'm not quite sure, but I think you need at least ~7GB of free space for /var/tmp/portage.

I've expanded my 5GB partition to 10GB, only because of openoffice.

That makes sense, but I don't know of a safe way to shift things around on my drive. I have got the system built up this far, I don't really want to start over again...

I may have to give up and just install the -bin package... :cry:

You have some room on /home, so you could create a $HOME/var/tmp/portage directory and symlink /var/tmp/portage there temporarily.

/var/tmp/portage is empty anyway when not in use, so removing it, creating a symlink to emerge OO then restoring it after, besides being an annoying hassle would not do any harm.

You also have your 2G ccache on /var/tmp - so your /var really only has ~3G usable space.

remember that /var/tmp is chmod 1777

Thanks for the suggestion Mike, it sounds good, except that initially it didn't work....

Here is what I did... After getting the first failure, I did a chmod 1777 on the /var/tmp/portage directory as well, which didn't seem to help...

Looking at the error output, I noticed the reference to a "/var/log/sandbox/sandbox-26805.log"... I wasn't sure why that would come up, but I know that I was using "sandbox" and "usersandbox" in the Features setting in make.conf. As an experiment, I tried turning "sandbox" off, which didn't help, but when I turned "usersandbox" off as well that seems to have gotten rid of the access denied error...

It is compiling now, will know in a few hours if it worked or not... I saw the message complaining about lack of ram, which might be a problem since the system has only 512M installed at present, but I do have a gig of swap, and top says over 900M of it is free right now, so hopefully that won't be a big issue...

 *  It is important to note that OpenOffice.org is a very fragile
 *  build when it comes to CFLAGS.  A number of flags have already
 *  been filtered out.  If you experience difficulty merging this
 *  package and use agressive CFLAGS, lower the CFLAGS and try to
 *  merge again. Also note that building OOo takes a lot of time and
 *  hardware ressources: 4-6 GB free diskspace and 256 MB RAM are
 *  the minimum requirements. If you have less, use openoffice-bin
 *  instead.
 *
 *  Also if you experience a build break, please make sure to retry
 *  with MAKEOPTS=-j1 before filing a bug.

 * The ebuild phase 'unpack' has exited unexpectedly. This type of behavior
 * is known to be triggered by things such as failed variable assignments
 * (bug #190128) or bad substitution errors (bug #200313). Normally, before
 * exiting, bash should have displayed an error message above. If bash did
 * not produce an error message above, it's possible that the ebuild has
 * called `exit` when it should have called `die` instead. This behavior
 * may also be triggered by a corrupt bash binary or a hardware problem
 * such as memory or cpu malfunction. If the problem is not reproducible or
 * it appears to occur randomly, then it is likely to be triggered by a
 * hardware problem. If you suspect a hardware problem then you should try
 * some basic hardware diagnostics such as memtest. Please do not report
 * this as a bug unless it is consistently reproducible and you are sure
 * that your bash binary and hardware are functioning properly.

STILL didn't work :evil: judging from the messages, it actually compiled all the way, and then failed at the install step - Here is the failure...

I think I'm going to try two things while I'm waiting to see if there are any other suggestions -
1. Completely change the Portage Temporary directory from PORTAGE_TMPDIR=/var/tmp to PORTAGE_TMPDIR=/home/var/tmp. The only place where I care about where that points other than as a temporary directory is in ccache, so I also changed CCACHE_DIR="${PORTAGE_TMPDIR}/ccache" to CCACHE_DIR="var/tmp/ccache" in order to keep the same ccache location.

2. Eliminate all items in the Portage "FEATURES" line, except for ccache

Any other ideas in case this doesn't work either? :?:

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicate Threads.

Common problem; the solutions given do work with due care.
See for example Building in a specific folder and /var/tmp/portage: not enough space.

If you use the symlink method, note you need to set correct permissions on the symlink target. Permissions on the link itself are ignored.
