Could anybody enlighten me with compatibility of W series laptops from Lenovo with Gentoo?
I am looking for a Thinkpad and W series looks good to me but I am not sure of its compatibility
with Gentoo.

Moreover, I am not buying T500 series because I had problems in the past with ATI graphics card
(W series does have a Nvidia graphics card).

Any suggestion/comments would be very useful.

Thanks.

Should be fine. I don't see any unusual hardware. Just be warned, graphics devices in general are a pain in linux. Each brand has its own quirks, it's not limited to ATI. Also, I never looked at the ThinkPads before. That pop-out screen on the 700ws looks awfully tempting. Anyways, hope this helps.

W series: I don't see anything unusual there. Almost all hardware is supported ootb by the Linux kernel (you'll need external firmware for Intel wireless networking which Portage does provide).

The Intel GMA 4500MHD currently is among the best supported gpus, but there's still plenty of room for improvements, that's why I'm always working on the latest X.org and git-sources, spying on Eric Anholt's drm repository for new patches to include.

Moved from Gentoo Chat to Duplicate Threads.

The member who reported this topic said it well:

Reason: We already have a "which laptop is the best for compatibility" thread. In fact, we have several. We even already have a very recent W series thread.

The original poster totally failed to search first.
See any of the linked threads and please, search before posting.

Edit: Just noticed this was your first post. My apologies for the somewhat harsh welcome. We do, however, have Guidelines to follow.

Enjoy the forums.
