The title says it all
Anyone try it yet? I'm curious as to how it will install alongside KDE 3.0.2. |

It's only been in CVS for seven hours, so it would only end up on people's hard drives about six hours ago, and since it's masked and showed up very quietly I don't think anyone has tried it yet. (Except for developers, of course.) _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

Remove the KDE 3.1 alpha-related lines in /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask and emerge -u world. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

Doing that will upgrade the existing version of KDE on your machine to the latest version, which is available but "masked" (as it is not considered a release). To install it, you must unmask it first (by removing the KDE alpha block from package.mask) and then issue a Portage command (such as emerge kde for a new install or emerge -u world for an existing install) to have this take effect. Note that since this ebuild is very new you will want to "emerge rsync" first, and that every time you rsync you must modify your package.mask again. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

Right, arts hasn't made it it the mirrors yet. You may have to download packages yourself and stick 'em in /usr/portage/distfiles manually. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

I'm going to try it out when I get home from work, is it necessary to emerge -u world? or can I just emerge kde? |

|
|
I am not using the 3.1 alpha packages, but directly the CVS sources (as of now, 20020714) and I must say I love the change from 3.0.2
The tabbed windows in konqueror, flash working nicely with everything compiled using GCC 3.1.1, a much improved KATE, ...
Just for your reference, I jave completely ditched Mozilla and Opera, in favor of konqueror, which not only has the best rendering layout (IMHO, that is) but is also faster. As soon as I can I'll post some screenshots, and you'll see what I mean
There is also a new branch on the repository called kdeextragear. I haven't checkd if Dan (is it you who maintains the KDE ebuilds, or I am wrong?) has made the ebuild, but it brings vimpart (for vim integration within kde apps), kreatecd, k3b and cdbakeoven with which you even can rip DVDs directly, and a few other bits...
I could not use the feature yet, but k3fb & k3dc, for desktop sharing (VNC) looks very well. For not talking about the integration of kget (the old caitoo) with konqueror. All this is in kdenetwork.
And last, though not less important at all, the new included styles, specially keramic, which I just love. Now my desktop is faster than ever (yes, it IS faster than KDE 3.0.2, at least this last compilation I did yesterday; I cannot say the same for the one I had done the previous weekend), and MUCH nicer
Now I'm worried, I'm in love, ... but it's not a girl,... it's my gentoo+kde+wolk box
P.S I only need to talk to Dan about someway for not having to compile the whole code each time I sync the CVS, but still maintaining the emerge procedure (I ahev modified the ebuilds to automatically do this).
Pretty easy, if you are willing to try, I only found on or two small pieces of code whihc didn't want to compile with GCC 3.1.1 |

I noticed the speed increase as well.
You know, for a alpha release, it's pretty stable.
The only thing thats bugging me is that my bar at the bottom of the screen looks strange. In the 3.1 screenshots, it shows the small lock & logout icons as greyish, yet mine are the "oldschool" look.
The other thing I can't get to is the desktop settings in the control panel. I keep getting a module not found in paths error for libkcm_konq.la - very wierd.
Other than that, it's looking good. |

Strange, When I emerge 3.1 Alpha, Gnome2 is also emerged?
Takes a long time to compile.....for more than 11 hours for now...and counting... (Athlon 700, gcc 3.1, athlon flags etc..) |
