my memory usage looks like:
Mem: 512848k total, 505344k used, 7504k free, 8972k buffers
Swap: 506036k total, 0k used, 506036k free, 408980k cached
does it seem odd that so much of my memory is in swap and cached and so little is 'free'.
thanks _________________ --The Devil is in the Details-- |

I do not understand why swap memory is cached.
It is ok for the physical memory to be cached. You can consider cached memory as free memory. Is memory that is allocated from the kernel to run faster the programs that you have already executed. But if another programs wants more memory than the free one, it can use the cached one. |

I don't think there is any swap cached, I think its just the layout of the readout.
Any free memory will be used by the kernel for disk cache. (no point in having unused memory in your machine sitting doing nothing )
Do cat /proc/meminfo for more detailed information, which should show you how much is actually in use. |
